"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six (666 - ed.)." - Revelation 13:18 (emphases added)

120x600-McMahon-top "The 1646 Calvinistic Westminster Confession of Faith denounces "popish monastical vows." It denies "the pope any power or jurisdiction" over magistrates, citing here not only II Thessalonians 2:4 but also the '666' passage of Revelation 13:15-17. It calls "papists ... idolaters." It describes "the popish sacrifice of the 'mass' ... [as] most abominably injurious to Christ's one sacrifice." Indeed, it terms "transubstantiation ... repugnant not to Scripture alone, but even to common sense and reason" and indeed "the cause of manifold superstitions, yea, of gross idolatries." - Antichrist in Scripture by Dr. Francis Nigel Lee

"There is no other head of the Church but the Lord Jesus Christ. Nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalts himself, in the Church, against Christ and all that is called God."

- Westminster Confession of Faith (Original Edition on the Puritan Hard Drive, emphases added), 25:6 "Of the Church" (and the Westminster Divines use, as one of the proof texts here, Revelation 13:6).

"We will also see, as we further proceed, the exact fitness of the suggestive name as given the beast, viz., "The Latin Man," ... The number of the name as given is 666. "Here is wisdom; let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man"; that is, a name, the number of the numerical value of its letters would amount to 666. As a challenge is here given, it is no evidence of presumption should we attempt, at least, to find out the number, especially as it is so closely linked with the intolerance of the beast, no one being allowed or tolerated, unless bearing the same. Now it is a remarkable fact that the name Lateinos, The Latin Man, the name of the fourth kingdom seen by Daniel, makes 666, both in Greek and Hebrew.

Puritan-Hard-Dr...-250x250-C.jpg This solution was first suggested by Irenaeus, as far back as the second century, and some three centuries before the rise of the beast. Says he, "Lateinos"* has the number 666, and it is a very probable solution, this being the name of the last kingdom of the four seen by Daniel." (Clark's Pub., 107.) And this has been the common interpretation among protestants ever since. As to the appropriateness of the name, we leave the reader to judge, since her letters, decrees and services are all in Latin. The two words in Greek and Hebrew are Lateinos and Romiith.

666-in-Greek-and-Hebrew.jpg

Here we have, to say the least of it, a most singular thing, that the same name should have the same numerical value in both Greek and Hebrew, the two languages in which the Scriptures were written.

250x250-Faded-Edwards-Blyth-Quote* The word is spelled both with "ei" and " i," as Lateinos and Latinos. See Schleusner's Lex. But the former and less common spelling is here used, as Professor Stuart suggests, "For the very purpose of concealment." Com. in Loc.

- James Stacy, Handbook of Prophecy, pp. 46-47 (emphases added), on the Puritan Hard Drive

Who was Irenaeus?

"Irenaeus was born about the time of Justin [Martyr]. He was a pupil of Polycarp of Smyrna, who had been a pupil of the Apostle John. Irenaeus says, "I can describe the spot on which Polycarp sat and expounded; his going in and coming out; the manner of his life; the figure of his body; the sermons he preached to the multitudes; how he related to us his converse with John, and the rest of those who had seen the Lord; how he mentioned their particular expressions, and what things he had heard from them of the Lord; of his miracles and of his doctrine."

666: The Classic View Of the Protestant Reformation and the Early Church

Free Reformation MP3s & More

The first two sermons below are the two best sermons on 666 (the number of the beast), which we have found, defending the biblical (classic Protestant and Reformed) position on 666 -- even taking us as far back as some of the early fathers of the church, helping to establish what was ultimately the Apostolic teaching on this much abused passage of Scripture (and refuting the many misinterpretations of number 666).
Bill Mencarow Recommends the Puritan Hard Drive BLue Graphic 666 - The Number of the Beast of Revelation, a.k.a. Antichrist -- The Historic Protestant Interpretation (Reformed Teaching) by W.J. Mencarow
The church settled the meaning of the book of Revelation centuries ago. Sadly, this has been lost to the modern church.
This sermon series is an appeal to the church to recover that meaning.
Rev. 13:18 says understanding (or wisdom) is required to "count" the meaning of the number of the beast, 666. This is clearly not the human wisdom of this world, which God calls foolishness. I Cor. 3:19: "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God." This is the problem with many of the claims you've heard about the meaning of 666 and the identity of Antichrist. What the Lord requires is not human wisdom, falsely called, but the wisdom that comes from reading and meditating upon the revelation of God through His written Word, the Bible, and living your life in obedience to it.
This sermon presents the interpretation of 666 that was held by the majority of Protestant theologians from the Reformation until the 1800s when mysticism on the one hand and liberalism on the other began to invade the church. This historic interpretation of the number of the beast has also been held by some proto-reformers (before the Protestant Reformation) and even by some of the church fathers going back to the second century -- and possibly even before!
250x250-Faded-Rawson-Westminster-Quote LISTENER COMMENTS (from Sermonaudio)

"Stunning research and presentation." I am a student of history and ancient Rome in particular. I have never, in book or audio form, encountered a presentation of the correct meaning of Six Hundred Three Score and Six that is as accurately detailed and researched in proper scholarly fashion as this sermon by Pastor W. J. Mencarow. History is something that I know very well. Nothing that Pastor Mencarow says is guesswork. Every historical statement that he makes is correct. His theology is also impeccable. May I please strongly encourage one and all to hear, not only this sermon, but the others in this series on Revelation. - twd (7/18/2008)
"666 Solved: Classic Reformed/Protestant Teaching!" An extremely well presented, thoroughly researched message expounding the true meaning of "666" in Scripture. Meticulous and relevant in exposing many far fetched fables related to "666" from expositors of the past, right up to our day. Also demonstrates how a number of modern Protestants adopt Roman Catholic teaching on prophecy. Takes us as far back as some of the early fathers of the church, establishing what was ultimately the Apostolic teaching on this much abused passage of Scripture. Additionally, this sermon clearly expounds the classic Reformed and Protestant teaching (for example, as found in the original Westminster Confession of Faith) on the number of the beast. Quotes On 666 and Antichrist (the Papacy)

Paul Washer Puritan Hard Drive Quote Graphic The Lord Jesus Christ is the Head of the church, in whom, by the appointment of the Father, all power for the calling, institution, order or government of the church, is invested in a supreme and sovereign manner; neither can the Pope of Rome in any sense be head thereof, but is that antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the church against Christ, and all that is called God; whom the Lord shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. (Colossians 1:18; Matthew 28:18-20; Ephesians 4:11, 12; 2 Thessalonians 2:2-9 ) - 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, 26:4.

18. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six.
 V. 18.-"The name of the beast," since the time of Ireneus, the disciple of Polycarp, who was cotemporary with the apostle John, is understood to be Lateinos, or Lateinus; for it is well known to scholars, that classical usage justifies the orthography of this word. However learned men may indulge their fancy, and sport with this mystic and sacred name and number, no other word fills up all the conditions required by the inspired writer. Latinus is the proper name of the "first beast," the Latin empire: it is the name common to the whole population of the empire, the Latins: it is the name of the founder of the empire, Latinus; and it contains the number, 666. The probability that this word contains the requisite name and number, amounts almost to a certainty. The unlearned reader may be easily taught to understand how to "count the number of the beast." Of course, the apostle John accommodated his expressions to the custom of his own age. Well, even children soon learn to number or count by the use of Roman letters of the alphabet. They know that the letter I, stands for one; V. for five, etc. Now, in the apostolic age, the Jews, Greeks and Romans, were accustomed to express numbers by the use of the letters of their respective alphabets. This we suppose to be the only rational and probable method of solving the mystery.
John Hendryx (Monergism) Reviews & Recommends the Puritan Hard DriveIn this chapter we have the fullest exhibition of the great antichristian confederacy, spoken of by prophets and apostles, including the "man of sin, to be revealed in his time." The component parts of that complex moral person called "Antichrist," are here graphically portrayed. The three most prominent features are the two beasts of the sea and of the earth, with the image of the first; or, a tyrannical empire, an apostate church, and the Pope. To suppose that the Antichrist is a power or moral person distinct from these,-a "wilful, infidel or atheistical king," is a mere chimera framed in a learned brain, disordered by antichristian politics. The chief, if not the only ostensible ground of such hypothesis is the language of our apostle, (1 John ii. 22.) "He is Antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son." The sound of the words of Scripture is too often mistaken for the sense. This is a notable example. From the words of our Divine Redeemer,-"My Father is greater than I," Socinians infer the essential inferiority of the Son to the Father. So in the preceding instance. The inference is, that the Antichrist is to be known by a doctrinal denial of deity. But the very name of this enemy of all righteousness, Antichrist, demonstrates his recognition of the existence and office of our Saviour. For why should he oppose a nonentity? All scholars are aware that the primary meaning of anti, is substitution. (Matt. xx. 28.) Antichrist usurps Christ's place in church and state, that he may more successfully oppose his interest. There is no mystery to the intelligent Christian in the declaration, that men too often "profess that they know God, but in works deny him." This explains the fact of Antichrist's denying the Father and the Son. Usurping the prerogatives of the Mediator is a practical denial of him,-of his authority, and by consequence, of the Father who sent him. "He that acknowledged the Son," in this sense, "hath the Father also;" while it is equally true, in the same sense,-"whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father." (1 John ii. 23.)
- Notes on the Apocalypse by David Steele on the Puritan Hard Drive

Pastor Scott Brown Recommends the Puritan Hard DriveBut what says ecclesiastical history to the later date? The great witness, as he is the primary one, is Irenaus, bishop of Lyons A.D. 177 to circa 202. To Gaul he came from Asia Minor, where he tells us he was a hearer of Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna and disciple of the apostle John. In his great work Against Heresies, we find him discussing the two readings of "the number of the beast" (Rev. xiii. 18), whether in the original text it was 666 or 616. He says that in all the approved and ancient copies (Greek text in this book not cited, see the book itself for the Greek) the reading was 666, and that this reading was attested by those who had seen John face to face (the Greek text in this book is omitted here). The importance attached to this reading lay in the belief that this number enigmatically pointed to the expected antichrist, whose name (he says) he will not speak of confidently, "because had it been necessary to name him at the present time, it would have been declared by him who saw the Revelation; nor was it long since it had been seen, but almost in our own generation (the Greek text in this book is omitted here), about the end of Domitian's reign

- David Brown, The Apocalypse Its Structure & Primary Predictions (1841), pp. 7-8, on the Puritan Hard Drive

Let us now consider the second reason why "the number of the beast" (666) as found in Revelation 13:18 is not Nero, thus removing this as evidence for a pre-70 a.d. dating of the Book of Revelation: There is a much more suitable identification for the number of the beast (666) than Nero Caesar.

a. The first reason why Nero Caesar is not a suitable identification for the number of the beast (666) is because Nero does not fit the time period that is described by the political beast of Rome with the ten horns in Daniel 7 and the ten crowned horns in Revelation 13:1, which as we have seen addresses a period of history in which the unified Roman Empire is broken and divided by ten barbarian kingdoms, three of which fall and are humbled at the time of the rising and exaltation of the little horn of the Romish Church and Papacy by the Emperor Justinian, who in 538 a.d. decreed that the Pope of Rome should thenceforth be given the title of Universal Bishop. It appeared that this little horn of ecclesiastical and papal Rome had almost miraculously risen out of the ashes of Rome that had been captured and sacked by the three kingdoms, but the little horn of ecclesiastical Rome and papal Rome prevailed over its captors each time. Thus, to identify Nero with the beast with ten crowned horns (in Revelation 13:1) is completely out of sync with the historical fulfillment of the ten ruling barbarian kingdoms that divided a unified Rome which occurred over four hundred years after the death of Nero.

Dr. Voddie Baucham Puritan Hard Drive Quote Graphicb. A second reason why Nero Caesar is not a suitable identification for the number of the beast (666) is that the actual number of the beast as found in Revelation 13:18 is recorded in Greek letters not Hebrew letters. How then is it suitable for the number of the beast to be in Greek letters, and yet the name of the beast to be in Hebrew letters? Preterists point to Hebrew words in the book of Revelation that are translated into Greek (such as "Abaddon" in Revelation 9:11 or "Armageddon" in Revelation 16:16). However, that is not what is in dispute here. That I willingly grant. What I have a problem with is that there are not Hebrew letters that when calculated equal 666 in Revelation 13:8, but to the contrary Greek letters. And thus, we should likewise expect not the Hebrew spelling of a name, but the Greek spelling of a name. It also seems much more suitable for the original audience in the seven Churches of Asia Minor that first received the Book of Revelation and that all spoke Greek (while fewer spoke Hebrew) to signify a Greek name using Greek numerical letters than a Hebrew name using Greek numerical letters.

c. A third reason why Nero Caesar is not a suitable identification for the number of the beast (666) is that for nearly 1700 years no one in the Church was known or recorded (to the best of my knowledge) to offer Nero's name as the number of the beast (666). Moses Stuart (Commentary on the Apocalypse, pp. 457-458, 1845), himself a Preterist, identifies Professor Benary of Berlin (c. 1840) as the first recorded scholar to propose Nero Caesar (and particularly Nero Caesar in Hebrew letters) as the name of the beast. Although it is not impossible that the true meaning of the number of the beast (666) might be hidden from the whole Church until about 1840, it does seem very unlikely that such would be the case, especially when Nero Caesar is not known to have been even mentioned by any coming from the first century (prior to 70 a.d.) to whom (according to the Preterist) the Book of Revelation was intended. According to the Preterist, those to whom the apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation were suppose to understand that Nero Caesar was intended by the number of the beast, and yet there is not a trace or even the mention of Nero Caesar as the name of the beast prior to about 1840. That seems remarkable to me.

A fourth and final reason why Nero Caesar is not a suitable identification for the number of the beast (666) is because there is a name that fits very well with the historical division of the Roman Empire into ten kingdoms, that is also a number of a man, that is the number of a name in Greek letter rather than in Hebrew letters, and that is of ancient origin (mentioned by Irenaeus in the second century as a probable choice): the Greek word ΛΑΤΕΙΝΟΣ (Lateinos - ed.)which means "Latin one" either referring to the Roman Empire as the Latin one or to a Latin man (Latinus being the founder of Rome). The Western Roman Empire (with its capital in Rome) was the Latin branch of the Empire where the language of Latin predominated, whereas the Eastern Roman Empire (with its capital in Constantinople) was the Greek branch of the Empire where the language of Greek predominated. And it was in the Western Roman Empire that the 10 kingdoms took up their rule. Thus, I submit that the name and number of the Roman beast in Revelation 13:18 is not Nero Caesar which removes another alleged piece of internal evidence from the Preterist in seeking to establish a pre-70 a.d. date of authorship for the Book of Revelation. - 666 & God's Gracious Covenant With Israel #22 (Partial & Full Preterism Refuted #6) by Greg Price (emphases added) and on the Puritan Hard Drive

"John Wycliffe, William Tyndale [Tyndale Bible], Martin Luther, John Calvin, Thomas Cranmer; in the seventeenth century, Bunyan, the translators of the King James Bible and the men who published the Westminster and Baptist confessions of Faith; Sir Isaac Newton, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards; and more recently Spurgeon, Bishop J.C. Ryle and Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones; these men among countless others, all saw the office of the Papacy as the antichrist." -
All Roads Lead to Rome, Michael de Semlyen, Dorchestor House Publications, p. 205, 1991.

"Now, it is manifest that the Roman pontiffs, with their adherents, defend [and practice] godless doctrines and godless services. And the marks [all the vices] of Antichrist plainly agree with the kingdom of the Pope and his adherents. For Paul, 2 Epistle 2:3, in describing to the Thessalonians Antichrist, calls him an adversary of Christ, who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God. He speaks therefore of one ruling in the Church, not of heathen kings, and he calls this one the adversary of Christ, because he will devise doctrine conflicting with the Gospel, and will assume to himself divine authority." - Of the Power and Primacy of the Pope, Treatise Compiled by the Theologians Assembled at Smalcald, in the Year 1537.

John Calvin (1509-1564) (Presbyterian): "Some persons think us too severe and censorious when we call the Roman pontiff Antichrist. But those who are of this opinion do not consider that they bring the same charge of presumption against Paul himself, after whom we speak and whose language we adopt· I shall briefly show that (Paul's words in II Thess. 2) are not capable of any other interpretation than that which applies them to the Papacy." - Institutes of the Christian Religion, on the Puritan Hard Drive.

250x250-Faded-Bennett-QuoteJohn Knox (1505-1572) (Scotch Presbyterian): John Knox sought to counteract "that tyranny which the pope himself has for so many ages exercised over the church." As with Luther, he finally concluded that the Papacy was "the very antichrist, and son of perdition, of whom Paul speaks." - The Zurich Letters, p. 199, on the Puritan Hard Drive.

Martin Luther (1483-1546) (Lutheran):
Based on prophetic studies, Martin Luther finally declared, "We here are of the conviction that the papacy is the seat of the true and real Antichrist." (Aug. 18, 1520). - Taken from The Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers, LeRoy Froom. Vol. 2, p. 121. "Luther proved, by the revelations of Daniel and St. John, by the epistles of St. Paul, St. Peter, and St. Jude, that the reign of Antichrist, predicted and described in the Bible, was the Papacy. And all the people did say, Amen! A holy terror seized their souls. It was Antichrist whom they beheld seated on the pontifical throne. This new idea, which derived greater strength from the prophetic descriptions launched forth by Luther into the midst of his contemporaries, inflicted the most terrible blow on Rome." - J.H. Merle D'Aubigne, History of the Reformation of the Sixteen Century, book vi, chapter xii, p. 215, on the Puritan Hard Drive.
John Wycliffe: "When the western church was divided for about 40 years between two rival popes, one in Rome and the other in Avigon, France, each pope called the other pope antichrist - and John Wycliffe is reputed to have regarded them as both being right: "two halves of Antichrist, making up the perfect Man of Sin between them." - Froom, The Prophetic Faith of our Fathers
Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556) (Anglican): "Whereof it followeth Rome to be the seat of antichrist, and the pope to be very antichrist himself. I could prove the same by many other scriptures, old writers, and strong reasons."- Works, Cranmer, Vol. 1, pp. 6-7.

250x250-Multi-Photos-Gray-Gradiant "... we detest and refuse the usurped authority of that Roman Antichrist upon the scriptures of God, upon the kirk, the civil magistrate, and consciences of men; all his tyrannous laws made upon indifferent things against our Christian liberty; his erroneous doctrine against the sufficiency of the written word, the perfection of the law, the office of Christ, and his blessed evangel; his corrupted doctrine concerning original sin, our natural inability and rebellion to God's law, our justification by faith only, our imperfect sanctification and obedience to the law; the nature, number, and use of the holy sacraments; his five bastard sacraments, with all his rites, ceremonies, and false doctrine, added to the ministration of the true sacraments without the word of God; his cruel judgment against infants departing without the sacrament; his absolute necessity of baptism; his blasphemous opinion of transubstantiation, or real presence of Christ's body in the elements, and receiving of the same by the wicked, or bodies of men; his dispensations with solemn oaths, perjuries, and degrees of marriage forbidden in the word; his cruelty against the innocent divorced; his devilish mass; his blasphemous priesthood; his profane sacrifice for sins of the dead and the quick; his canonization of men; calling upon angels or saints departed, worshipping of imagery, relicks, and crosses; dedicating of kirks, altars, days; vows to creatures; his purgatory, prayers for the dead; praying or speaking in a strange language, with his processions, and blasphemous litany, and multitude of advocates or mediators; his manifold orders, auricular confession; his desperate and uncertain repentance; his general and doubtsome faith; his satisfaction of men for their sins; his justification by works, opus operatum, works of supererogation, merits, pardons, peregrinations, and stations; his holy water, baptizing of bells, conjuring of spirits, crossing, sayning, anointing, conjuring, hallowing of God's good creatures, with the superstitious opinion joined therewith; his worldly monarchy, and wicked hierarchy; his three solemn vows, with all his shavelings of sundry sorts; his erroneous and bloody decrees made at Trent, with all the subscribers or approvers of that cruel and bloody band, conjured against the kirk of God. And finally, we detest all his vain allegories, rites, signs, and traditions brought in the kirk, without or against the word of God, and doctrine of this true reformed kirk; to the which we join ourselves willingly, in doctrine, faith, religion, discipline, and use of the holy sacraments, as lively members of the same in Christ our head: promising and swearing, by the great name of the LORD our GOD, that we shall continue in the obedience of the doctrine and discipline of this kirk [The Confession which was subscribed at Halyrud-house the 25th of February 1587-8, by the King, Lennox Huntly, the Chancellor, and about 95 other persons, hath here added, "Agreeing to the word." Sir John Maxwell of Pollock hath the original parchment.], and shall defend the same, according to our vocation and power, all the days of our lives; under the pains contained in the law, and danger both of body and soul in the day of God's fearful judgment. - The Confession Of Faith Of The Kirk Of Scotland: Or The National Covenant, With A Designation Of Such Acts Of Parliament As Are Expedient For Justifying The Union After Mentioned (1639).

Cotton Mather (1663-1728) (Congregational Theologian)
"The oracles of God foretold the rising of an Antichrist in the Christian Church: and in the Pope of Rome, all the characteristics of that Antichrist are so marvelously answered that if any who read the Scriptures do not see it, there is a marvelous blindness upon them."
