Pastor Greg Price Reviews & Recommends the Puritan Hard Drive "We are the Easter people."

- Pope John Paul II

"But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."

- Matthew 15:9

"Our Easter day, our Ascension day, our Whitsuntide is every Lord's day."

- Richard Greenham, Works, p. 421

"It is commonly objected, that we may as well keep a day for the nativity, as for the resurrection of Christ. We have answered already, that Christ's Day, or the Lord's Day, is the day appointed for remembrance of his nativity, and all his actions and benefits, as well as for the resurrection."

- David Calderwood (Covenanter), emphases added

"And next in particular, concerning festival days findeth that in the explication of the first head of the first book of discipline it was thought good that the feasts of Christmas, Circumcision, Epiphany, with the feasts of the Apostles, Martyrs, and Virgin Mary be utterly abolished because they are neither commanded nor warranted by Scripture and that such as observe them be punished by Civil Magistrates. Here utter abolition is craved and not reformation of abuses only and that because the observation of such feasts have no warrant from the word of God."

Why No Christmas Or Easter? by David Silversides (Web, Article)

"Therefore Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the "Feast of feasts," the "Solemnity of solemnities," just as the Eucharist is the "Sacrament of sacraments" (the Great Sacrament)."

250x250-Faded-Silversides-Quote "I would to God that every holy day (including Christmas and Easter - ed.) whatsoever besides the Lord's day were abolished. That zeal which brought them first in, was without all warrant of the Word, and merely followed corrupt reason, forsooth to drive out the holy days of the pagans, as one nail drives out another. Those holy days have been so tainted with superstitions that I wonder we tremble not at their very names."

- Martin Bucer, cited in William Ames, A Fresh Suit Against Human Ceremonies in God's Worship (1633), pp. 359-60, emphases added.

"And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them."

The Paganism of Easter Revisited by Harold Chase (Free MP3)

"A True Blessing! Well considered and researched. The counsel of Scripture meets with the witness of history to produce a thought-provoking and controversial teaching on the modern practice of Easter. Thank you, Pastor Chase for taking such a strong stand for righteousness! Anyone interested in the regulative principle of worship will find this study indispensable." - Mustard Grains from Indiana (Listener Comment on Sermonaudio)

"Easter is the principal feast of the ecclesiastical year. (Pope - ed.) Leo I (Sermo xlvii in Exodum) calls it the greatest feast (festum festorum), and says that Christmas is celebrated only in preparation for Easter. It is the centre of the greater part of the ecclesiastical year. ... The first Vespers of Easter are connected now with the Mass of Holy Saturday. ... To have a correct idea of the Easter celebration and its Masses, we must remember that it was intimately connected with the solemn rite of baptism. The preparatory liturgical acts commenced on the eve and were continued during the night. When the number of persons to be baptized was great, the sacramental ceremonies and the Easter celebration were united."

- The Catholic Encyclopedia, "Easter" Article, emphases added

"In 1899, the General Assembly of the PCUS was overtured to give a 'pronounced and explicit deliverance' against the recognition of 'Christmas and Easter as religious days.' Even at this late date, the answer came back in a solid manner: 'There is no warrant in Scripture for the observance of Christmas and Easter as holydays, rather the contrary (see Gal. 4:9-11; Col. 2:16-21), and such observance is contrary to the principles of the Reformed faith, conducive to will-worship, and not in harmony with the simplicity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.'"

- William Perkins (Puritan), A Golden Chain, or the Description of Theology

"All human inventions which are set up to corrupt the simple purity of the Word of God, and to undo the worship which he demands and approves, are true sacrileges, in which the Christian man cannot participate without blaspheming God, and trampling his honour underfoot."

Easter: The Devil's Holiday by Dr. C. Matthew McMahon (Web, Article)

"Easter has little to do with real Christianity. Does that surprise you? It should not. For example, Easter was not popular with the Puritans or the Pilgrim settlers in America. Neither Puritans or Pilgrims had use for ceremonies associated with religious festivals invented in either pagan history, or reinvented by Roman Catholicism. In actuality, here in the America's only after the bloodshed Civil War did Easter "begin again" to be accepted." Read More.

Easter: Its Pagan origins: Origins of the name "Easter"

The name "Easter" originated with the names of an ancient Goddess and God. The Venerable Bede, (672-735 CE.) a Christian scholar, first asserted in his book De Ratione Temporum that Easter was named after Eostre (a.k.a. Eastre). She was the Great Mother Goddess of the Saxon people in Northern Europe. Similarly, the "Teutonic dawn goddess of fertility [was] known variously as Ostare, Ostara, Ostern, Eostra, Eostre, Eostur, Eastra, Eastur, Austron and Ausos." Her name was derived from the ancient word for spring: "eastre." Similar Goddesses were known by other names in ancient cultures around the Mediterranean, and were celebrated in the springtime. Some were:

"When the Puritans came to power in England, attention was repeatedly given to Christmas. In 1644, December 25 fell upon a day previously scheduled for a monthly fast. The Parliament debated the issue and resolved to observe the day with fasting and prayer, especially due to the present circumstances of the nation. In June 1647, Parliament passed legislation abolishing Christmas and other holidays: 'Forasmuch as the feast of the nativity of Christ, Easter, Whitsuntide, and other festivals, commonly called holy-days, have been heretofore superstitiously used and observed; be it ordained, that the said feasts, and all other festivals, commonly called holy-days, be no longer observed as festivals; any law, statute, custom, constitution, or canon, to the contrary in anywise not withstanding.'"

Easter: A Satanic, Demonic, Pagan, Roman Catholic Holy Day Which God Abhors (A Violation of the Second and Fourth Commandments) by Dr. C. Matthew McMahon (Free MP3, 26 minutes)

"Easter is a pagan festival... However, early Christianity made a pragmatic acceptance of ancient pagan practises, most of which we enjoy today at Easter... eventually Christianity came to an accommodation with the pagan Spring festival. Although we see no celebration of Easter in the New Testament... today many churches are offering "sunrise services" at Easter -- an obvious pagan solar celebration. The date of Easter is not fixed, but instead is governed by the phases of the moon -- how pagan is that?

HISTORY OF HOLY DAYS (CHRISTMAS, EASTER, CHRISTIAN SABBATH, JEWS, etc.), IDOLATRY, ICONOCLASM, etc. by Dr. Steven Dilday (SWRB blog listing the 7 free MP3s in this excellent series of sermons)

Much needed preaching in our day, when many Protestants worship more like Roman Catholics than like the best Reformers. This sermon contains much important Scriptural and historical information. On this topic George Gillespie (a Scottish Covenanter and Westminster Divine), in his classic work, A Dispute Against the English Popish Ceremonies Obtruded Upon the Church of Scotland, writes, "Forasmuch then, as kneeling before the consecrated bread, the sign of the cross, surplice, festival days (Christmas, Easter, etc. - ed.), bishopping, bowing to the altar, administration of the sacraments in private places, etc., are the wares of Rome, the baggage of Babylon, the trinkets of the whore, the badges of Popery, the ensigns of Christ's enemies and the very trophies of Antichrist: we cannot conform, communicate, and symbolize with the idolatrous Papists, in the use of the same, without making ourselves idolaters by participation."

"All the fun things about Easter are pagan. Bunnies are a leftover from the pagan festival of Eostre, a great northern goddess whose symbol was a rabbit or hare. Exchange of eggs is an ancient custom, celebrated by many cultures. Hot cross buns are very ancient too. In the Old Testament we see the Israelites baking sweet buns for an idol, and religious leaders trying to put a stop to it.The early church clergy also tried to put a stop to sacred cakes being baked at Easter. In the end, in the face of defiant cake-baking pagan women, they gave up and blessed the cake instead."

- The pagan roots of Easter (The Guardian, UK), emphases added

"Even if the pagan associations of the past or the current association with Roman Catholicism in the present were absent, the very fact that the Bible does not teach the observance of Christmas or Easter should be enough for us to avoid it. In the Old Testament, when God told the people of Israel exactly how to worship him, including the special days they were to observe, he also said, 'what thing soever I command you, observe to do it; thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it'. (Deut. 12/32 cf. Lev. 10/1-2)

In the New Testament Christ taught the same thing: -- 'In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men' (Mark 7/7-8).

The Apostle Paul also warns against 'will worship' (Col. 2/22-23), that is worship that originates in what man wants to do rather than what God requires him to do. We may like to say to others, 'you worship God your way, I'll worship him mine', but God actually requires us to worship him neither your way nor my way, but his way.

Bill Mencarow Recommends the Puritan Hard Drive BLue Graphic The 'church calendar' was never appointed by God. ... Man-made religion tends not to rest content alongside the true ordinances of God. Mountains of Christmas cards are delivered on the Sabbath before 25th December. If 'Christmas Day' is a Sabbath, many churches cancel evening services and have a minimal morning one. Why? Because man's ordinances inevitably tend to 'make the commandment of God of none effect' (Matt.15/6).

But the heart of the matter is this; does God, because he is God, have the right to tell us how to approach him? Surely he has the right to prescribe the outward form of worship, the Mediator through whom we should come and the state of heart (repentance and faith) with which we should come. From the inside out, God must be acknowledged as God, as being both the object and prescriber of worship.

The issue is ultimately between man-made religion and Biblical Christianity. If we believe the latter should be closely adhered to in doctrine, let our worship and practice be equally conformed to the Word of God. Biblical doctrine and Biblical practice must stand together. The neglect of the latter invariably tends to undermine the former, however slowly and imperceptibly. 'Doing our own thing' in worship, even in observing Christmas and Easter, if followed through to its full conclusion, is subversive of only one thing -- the Gospel."

A Dispute Against the English Popish Ceremonies Obtruded Upon the Church of Scotland by George Gillespie (Digital Download PDF, also on the Puritan Hard Drive)

"Easter is essentially a pagan festival which is celebrated with cards, gifts and novelty Easter products, because it's fun and the ancient symbolism still works... What better way to celebrate, than to bite the head off the bunny goddess, go to a "sunrise service", get yourself a sticky-footed fluffy chick and stick it on your TV, whilst helping yourself to a hefty slice of pagan simnel cake? Happy Easter everyone!"

- The pagan roots of Easter (The Guardian, UK), emphases added

"This scriptural teaching that whatever Scripture does not warrant is to be excluded from worship is known as the 'regulative principle'. The exclusion of the church calendar, uninspired hymns, musical instruments, vestments and unscriptural ceremonies as well as more modern encroachments such as drama and dance, all stand on this same principle. Acceptance of this principle is a mark of a Reformed Church.

Remember the Sabbath Day 5/5 (On Christmas, Easter And Other Pagan And Roman Catholic/Papal Antichrist Holy Days) - Flee Idolatry! by Greg Price (Free MP3)

Defends the classic Puritan, Reformed, Westminster Confession position on the Sabbath and man instituted "holy days" (i.e. holy days not instituted by God in Scripture). The section on Christ-mass, Easter and other holy days invented by man (and "the man of sin", the Papacy) begins part way into this message.

250x250-Faded-Rawson-Westminster-Quote "From Ishtar to Eostre, the roots of the resurrection story go deep. We should embrace the pagan symbolism of Easter."

- The pagan roots of Easter (The Guardian, UK), emphases added

"Easter, then, traces back through Astarte was also worshipped in ancient times, and that from the name Astarte, whose name in Nineveh was Ishtar, the religious workings during the month of March and April, as now practiced in most of Christendom, are called by the name of Easter. In ancient times the pagans called this time of the year Easter-monath.

Even Socrates, the ancient philosopher, describes the different ways in which Easter was observed in different countries in his time during the fifth century. He states, "Thus much already laid down may seem a sufficient treatise to prove that the celebration of the feast of Easter began everywhere more of custom than by any commandment either of Christ or any Apostle." (Hist. Ecclesiast.) Even Socrates, the philosopher of the 5th Century (not the pagan 5th century BC philosopher) knew Easter was not a Christian doctrine. ...

We have Rome borrowing pagan rituals to change the date of Christ's entrance into the world by 4 years to compensate amalgamating the celebration of devil worship with Christianity; the adoption of Ishtar, or Astarte, Easter, as a Papist degradation of worship; the violation of the regulative principle in deeming a day to be worshipped as such, the entrance of eggs from Druidic worship, or pomegranates and oranges that turned into chocolate bunnies and Ishtar eggs for a candy basket to give on Easter Sunday, and the Babylonian influences of pagan rituals through every aspect of Easter and we find you, reader, going out this week to apply this all to little Johnny and little Debbie because everyone else is doing it at church.

If you want to be a Papist, then call yourself a Papist, or a Druid, or a Grecian worshipper of the devil. Don't call yourself Christian by upholding a blatantly obvious demonic holy-day that God abhors."

- Dr. Matthew McMahon, Easter: The Devil's Holiday, emphases added

"In Calvin's refutation of the claims of the Church of Rome, the regulative principle of Reformed worship provided a charter of Christian liberty. In his doctrine and practice, as in that of the Puritans in the following century, it was a liberating power, cutting off at the root the tyrannical impositions of men in the worship of God by asserting that the Christian is free from the commandments of men in this matter, for, it was insisted, God is the only law-giver, and His will is the perfect rule of all righteousness and holiness."

"If it be asked, then, by what things chiefly the Christian religion has a standing amongst us, and maintains its truth, it will be found that the following two not only occupy the principal place, but comprehend under them all the other parts, and consequently the whole substance of Christianity, viz., a knowledge first, of the right way to worship God; and secondly of the source from which salvation is to be sought. When these are kept out of view, though we may glory in the name of Christians, our profession is empty and vain."

Presbyterians Do Not Observe Christmas, Easter, etc. (A Reformation Argument Against Popish Holy Days) by Samuel Miller (Free MP3)

"I know how difficult it is to persuade the world that God disapproves of all modes of worship not expressly sanctioned by his word. The opposite persuasion which cleaves to them, being seated, as it were, in their very bones and marrow, is, that whatever they do has in itself a sufficient sanction, provided it exhibits some kind of zeal for the honour of God. But since God not only regards as fruitless, but also plainly abominates, whatever we understand from zeal to his worship, if at variance with his command, what do we gain by a contrary course? The words of God are clear and distinct, 'Obedience is better than sacrifice.' 'in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men,' (1 Sam 15:22; Matt 15:9). Every addition to his word, especially in this matter, is a lie. Mere 'will worship' is vanity. This is the decision, and when once the judge has decided, it is no longer time to debate."

Many of the same biblical arguments against Antichrist's "Christ-mass", especially those from the second commandment (the regulative principle of worship or the sovereignty of God over worship) and the fourth commandment (the Lord's Day or the sovereignty of God over our use of time), also apply the Easter.

"What do we find when entering into Roman Catholicism's "borrowing" of paganism? John Gill states, 'Popish festivals were observed very early, long before the Pope of some arrived to the height of his ambition...' (John Gill, Sermon 57: A Dissertation on the Rise and Progress of Popery, page 17; Ages Ultimate Library, 2004). We find their continued alliance with breaking the regulative principle, and the replacement of true worship, with worshipping that which is unholy. They institute unscriptural burdens such as Lent, fast days, sacred rites that control their kingdom with superstitions and false religion guised in the cloak of 'authority' and hide the truth from people to damn them for all eternity. One such deception is their introduction of the "Christian festival of Easter."

"Rightly so, the Westminster Confession states in the appendix entitled, 'An Appendix, Touching Days and Places for Public Worship,' the following, 'The key clause of interest to this study is, "Festival days, vulgarly called Holy-days, having no warrant in the word of God, are not to be continued." Later Presbyterian theology followed suit. While people 'say' they adhere to the Confession, they dip hardboiled eggs into food coloring, and buy Easter Baskets for their children. Robert Dabney states in abolishing Easter, 'The objections are: first, that this countenances "will-worship," or the intrusion of man's inventions into God's service; second, it is an implied insult to Paul's inspiration, assuming that he made a practical blunder, which the church synods, wiser than his inspiration, had to mend by a human expedient; and third, we have here a practical confession that, after all, the average New Testament Christian does need a stated holy day, and therefore the ground of the Sabbath command is perpetual and moral.'" "One should not desire to carry parts of the package of Romanism following papist theological ideas with Lent, Good Friday, Palm Sunday, Easter, etc. The Romanist Holy Week is the culmination of events marking the final days of Jesus before Easter Sunday. These are the days:

Palm Sunday - The Sunday before Easter Sunday recalling Jesus' entry into Jerusalem a week before dying on the cross.

Holy Monday - Jesus' cleansing of the temple and turning over the tables of the money changers to purify the house of worship.

Holy Tuesday - Jesus' talk with his disciples on the Mount of Olives about the soon to come destruction of Jerusalem.

Holy Wednesday - The day Judas decided to betray Jesus in exchange for 30 pieces of silver.

Maundy Thursday - The Last Supper of Jesus and his time in the garden with his disciples who would not stay awake before his arrest.

Good Friday - The day Jesus died on the cross.

Holy Saturday - The final day of Lent and the Holy Week.

Easter Sunday - The resurrection of Jesus.

However, we have been delivered through the Scriptures from following such man-made things."

"But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." - The Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 15:9)

"Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. " (Jer. 10:2-4).

"The regulative principle of worship has clear implications for those who want to promote the celebration of Christmas. The Regulative Principle forces those who celebrate Christmas to prove from Scripture that God has authorized the celebrating of such a day. This, in fact, is impossible." - From the free online book The Regulative Principle of Worship and Christmas by Brian Schwertley.

Pope Benedict XVI
"The word for Christmas in late Old English is Cristes Maesse, the Mass of Christ... Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the Church. Irenaeus and Tertullian omit it from their lists of feasts; Origen, glancing perhaps at the discreditable imperial Natalitia, asserts (in Lev. Hom. viii in Migne, P.G., XII, 495) that in the Scriptures sinners alone, not saints, celebrate their birthday
... The well-known solar feast, however, of Natalis Invicti, celebrated on 25 December, has a strong claim on the responsibility for our December date. For the history of the solar cult, its position in the Roman Empire, and syncretism with Mithraism, see Cumont's epoch-making "Textes et Monuments" etc... Though Rome gives three Masses to the Nativity only, Ildefonsus, a Spanish bishop, in 845, alludes to a triple mass on Nativity, Easter, Whitsun, and Transfiguration (P.L., CVI, 888)." - From The Catholic Encyclopedia.

Pope-In-Santa-Hat.png "Of all the feasts throughout the year the celebration of Christmas Day and Christmas Eve are the most popular... The date of December 25 was established about the year 320, and the Popes seem to have chosen the twenty-fifth day of December principally to divert the attention of the people from the celebration of a pagan feast of the Mithras cult which was called the "Birthday of the Unconquered Sun" (Natalis Solis Invicti)... Throughout the Middle Ages, Christmas came to be celebrated more and more. Especially during the period from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries all the arts and crafts of the Christian nations were made serviceable to the festivities associated with the Nativity of the Saviour. Plays and songs, carols and dances, spices and flowers, images and statues - all creation was made to serve the celebration of the feast. The foundation of all these customs and traditions was always Holy Mass - the Christ-Mass - the Divine Office and the sacramentals. The unfortunate zeal of the Puritans has certainly influenced the American celebration of Christmas. It is very difficult in our day to realize that Christmas was outlawed in New England until the second half of the last century. As late as 1870, classes were held in the public schools of Boston on Christmas day, and any truant pupil was gravely punished or even publicly dismissed from school." - "Meaning and History of Christmas," CatholicCulture.org.

"For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies." (Rev. 18:3)

"Christmas. This is the name of the day on which is wont to be celebrated the idolatrous Romish sacrifice of the mass, in honor of the birth of Christ. As nearly as can be now ascertained, the day was first set apart for this purpose by the authority of the bishop at Rome, toward the close of the fourth century, or early in the fifth. ... We do not acknowledge the authority of its appointment. If the religious observance of Christmas was divinely enjoined upon us, or if we had evidence in the writings of the apostles, that they observed it, or that they taught the churches which they established to do so, then we should feel ourselves obliged to observe the day. But as Protestants, we long ago abjured the authority of the Pope of Rome, and we still utterly repudiate his right to legislate for us, either over our consciences or our conduct. It was an essential principle of the Reformation, which we hold to have been sound, and the only principle which could have been safe, to reject every thing which appeared manifestly to be of human contrivance, and thus to carry the church back, both in its doctrines and its practices, to the incorrupt simplicity of the apostolic times." - "Christmas," from The Reformed Presbyterian magazine, January, 1851.

"The Romish Church, in opposition to the word of God, has a great multiplicity of annually returning sacred seasons. The 25th day of December is one of those seasons; at which time, originally, a heathen festival was held. 'This day was next baptized into a Romish mass for the birth of Christ.' The truth is, the day of Christ's nativity has been irrecoverably lost. Had this date been designed for special religious veneration, its date would have been preserved in the Holy Record, and a divine command given for its proper observance. The absence both of the date and command, makes it as clear to us as a sunbeam, that the natal day of our Saviour, even were it known, should not be honored by any religious observance whatsoever." - "Christmas," from The Associate Presbyterian Magazine, February, 1879.

Records-Church-Scotland-1638-Downwards.jpg "And next in particular, concerning festival days findeth that in the explication of the first head of the first book of discipline it was thought good that the feasts of Christmas, Circumcision, Epiphany, with the feasts of the Apostles, Martyrs, and Virgin Mary be utterly abolished because they are neither commanded nor warranted by Scripture and that such as observe them be punished by Civil Magistrates. Here utter abolition is craved and not reformation of abuses only and that because the observation of such feasts have no warrant from the word of God." - The Acts of the General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland, December 10, Session 17, 1638, pp. 37-38 .

Christmas Condemned By Christ (2/3) by Greg Price (Puritan Worship Series)

Christmas Condemned By Christ (3/3) by Greg Price (Puritan Worship Series)

SET SUMMARY: Greg Price shows how the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ directly condemns all man-invented holy days.

Scripture and history are brought to bear most specifically on the celebration of Christ-mass, demonstrating why it is a sin to celebrate this day.
It is also noted that Scripture never commands the celebration of this day and that there is no evidence that Christ and the Apostles ever celebrated this day -- in fact, this sycretism of paganism and "Babylonian" Christianity was not first celebrated until 354 A.D. (when December 25 was chosen, in accord with the Pagan feast of Saturnalia, as the day of "celebration").

Price also clearly shows that to call yourself Reformed while you hold on to this Roman Catholic/Pagan monument of idolatry makes for a serious contradiction in your testimony -- as the best Reformed churches have always disciplined those (in accord with Scriptural teaching) who broke the second and fourth commandments by keeping antichristian festival days like Christ-mass, Easter, etc.

Citations from Martin Luther, John Calvin and the company of Geneva Pastors, the Church of Scotland's First Book of Discipline, the 1620 Dutch Synod, the Civil Government of Holland (1625), the British Colonies in the U.S. and the Westminster Assembly all speak with one voice against this Romish corruption.
Common objections against the classic Reformed position are also answered.

Christmas Is Part Of Roman Catholic (Papacy/Antichrist) Missionary Strategy And High-Handed Idolatry

Brain Schwertley Color Graphic
Brian Schwertley
"Christmas was not celebrated by the apostolic church.

It was not celebrated during the first few centuries of the church. As late as A.D. 245, Origen (Hom. 8 on Leviticus) repudiated the idea of keeping the birthday of Christ, "as if he were a king Pharaoh."

By the middle of the 4th century, many churches in the Latin west were celebrating Christmas. During the 5th century, Christmas became an official Roman Catholic holy day. In A.D. 534, Christmas was recognized as an official holy day by the Roman state.

The reason that Christmas became a church holy day has nothing to do with the Bible.
The Bible does not give the date of Christ's birth.

Nowhere in the Bible are we commanded to celebrate Christmas.

Christmas (as well as many other pagan practices) was adopted by the Roman church as a missionary strategy."

That zeal which brought them first in, was without all warrant of the Word, and merely followed corrupt reason, forsooth to drive out the holy days of the pagans, as one nail drives out another. Those holy days have been so tainted with superstitions that I wonder we tremble not at their very names." - Martin Bucer, cited in William Ames, A Fresh Suit Against Human Ceremonies in God's Worship (1633) , pp. 359-60.

Increase-Mather.jpg

"1. In the pure Apostolical times there was no Christ-mass day observed in the Church of God. We ought to keep to the primitive Pattern. That Book of Scripture which is called, The Acts of the Apostles, saith nothing of their keeping Christ's Nativity as an Holy-day. The [Cent. 2.] Centuriators, and many others take notice that in the first Ages of the New-Testament Church, there were no stated Anniversary Holy-days among Christians. Easter was kept a long time before the Feast of the Nativity, and yet the Apostles never ordained that, as [Lib. 5. c. cap. 22.] Socrates (the most excellent of the Ancient Ecclesiastical Historians) does truly observe. Had there been the least hint of any such day observed in the primitive times, learned Vossius would have told the world of it. One [Voetius in Disput. de Nativ. Christi. p. 22.] saith of him, Si pergama dextra defendi possunt etiam hac defensa fuissent . But he acknowledges that the Feast of Christ's Nativity was not kept in the first nor yet in the second Century. After Prelatical writers have said all they can say, Chemnitius [ Contra Conc. Trial. part. 4 de Festis. p. 262.] his words will be found true. Anniversarium diem Natalis Christi celebratum fuisse, apud vetustissimos nunquam legitur . The most Ancient writers speak not the least word concerning the celebration of Christ's Birth-day.

2. The word Christ-mass is enough to cause such as are studious of reformation to dislike what shall be known by a name so superstitious. Why should Protestants own any thing which has the name of Mass in it? How unsuitable is it to join Christ and Mass together? i.e., Christ and Antichrist. But what Communion has light with Darkness, and what concord hath Christ with Belial? 2 Cor. 6:15. some of the Jesuits [So the Rhemists.] have advised that endeavours should be used to keep up their old terms and names, such as Priest, Altar, Christ-mass, Candlemass, and the like, hoping that by means thereof in time the things would follow the Names whereby their memory is preserved."

George Gillespie Larger Graphic
George Gillespie
George Gillespie, one of the Scottish Commissioners to the Westminster Assembly, and one of the greatest theologians since the days of the Apostles, writes,

"By communicating with idolaters in their rites and ceremonies, we ourselves become guilty of idolatry; even as Ahaz, 2 Kings 16:10, was an idolater, eo ipso, that he took the pattern of an altar from idolaters. Forasmuch, then, as kneeling before the consecrated bread, the sign of the cross, surplice, festival days (like Christmas-ed.), bishopping, bowing down to the altar, administration of the sacraments in private places, etc., are the wares of Rome, the baggage of Babylon, the trinkets of the whore, the badges of Popery, the ensigns of Christ's enemies, and the very trophies of antichrist, -- we cannot conform, communicate and symbolise with the idolatrous Papists in the use of the same, without making ourselves idolaters by participation.

Shall the chaste spouse of Christ take upon her the ornaments of the whore? Shall the Israel of God symbolise with her who is spiritually called Sodom and Egypt? Shall the Lord's redeemed people wear the ensigns of their captivity? Shall the saints be seen with the mark of the beast? Shall the Christian church be like the antichristian, the holy like the profane, religion like superstition, the temple of God like the synagogue of Satan?" (A Dispute Against English Popish Ceremonies, in Gillespie's Works volume one, p. 80, SWRB reprint, or as free MP3s at A Dispute Against the English Popish Ceremonies emphases added).

Best extra-biblical book ever written!
I. The light of nature showeth that there is a God, who hath lordship and sovereignty over all; is good, and doeth good unto all; and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served with all the heart, and with all the soul, and with all the might. But the acceptable way of worshipping the true God is instituted by himself, and so limited by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshipped according to the imaginations and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation or any other way not prescribed in the holy Scripture (emphases added).

VII. As it is of the law of nature, that, in general, a due proportion of time be set apart for the worship of God; so, in his Word, by a positive, moral, and perpetual commandment, binding all men in all ages, he hath particularly appointed one day in seven for a Sabbath, to be kept holy unto him: which, from the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, was the last day of the week; and, from the resurrection of Christ, was changed into the first day of the week, which in Scripture is called the Lord's Day, and is to be continued to the end of the world as the Christian Sabbath (emphases added).

History of Holy Days (Sabbath/Lord's Day, Christmas, Easter, etc.) by Dr. Steven Dilday (7 Free MP3s)
Dr. Steven Dilday Reviews & Recommends the Puritan Hard Drive
An sensational series of sermons and a "must listen" for all seekers after truth who are interested in what the Bible teaches about holy days (holidays), including Christmas and Easter.

This set of messages is certainly among the best series of sermons we have heard on holy days, excepting Dr. Dilday's position on headcoverings (see The Customary Practice Of Headcoverings: An Exegetical/Historical Study Of 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 Presented In A Series Of Letters by Greg Price).

Faithful listeners will be well rewarded for investing time in listening to all seven messages below.

The crowning sermon of this fine series on little heard Bible truth related to removing Antichrist's holy days, removing the monuments to idolatry of the Papal Antichrist, the duty of the civil magistrate [rulers] in these matters, errors of Dispensationalism, the egalitarian American amendments to the Westminster Confession of Faith, Jonathan Edwards on Antichrist and his holy days, David Steel on separation, etc.

Dr. Steven Dilday is a major modern-day Reformation scholar and has produced an amazing series of messages in the "History of Holy Days" series featured above. Dr. Dilday is also Pastor of Liberty and Grace Reformed Church in Northern Virginia, President of The Matthew Poole Project, Professor of Hebrew and Director of the Ph.D. Program in Puritan History and Literature at Whitefield Theological Seminary. He also directs the Master of Theology degree in "Ecclesiastical Latin" at Whitefield Theological Seminary. Dr. Dilday is currently translating the "Synopsis" written by the Puritan Divine, Matthew Poole. This project when completed will consist of approximately 82 volumes. Dr. Dilday's comments on the Puritan Hard Drive follow below.

Touch the Infinite...
Through the Puritan Hard Drive!

"For a number of years now, I have followed, and benefited from, the work of Still Waters Revival Books, particularly the Reformation and Puritan Bookshelf CD sets... and now the Puritan Hard Drive.

The Puritan Hard Drive is a remarkable accomplishment!

The common Christian can now have a world-class Presbyterian and Reformed library at his fingertips, for only pennies per volume.

I do not think that it is an exaggeration to say that the Puritan Hard Drive presents an historic and singular opportunity.

The works on the Puritan Hard Drive have been invaluable to me in sermon preparation and in improving personal and familial piety. If these had been the only blessings attached to the reading of these documents, the expense (even if it had been much greater) would have been justified; but there is more here.

In this present time, a great many Presbyterians (particularly in North America) have forgotten and implicitly (perhaps unwittingly) rejected their Presbyterian heritage. Strangely, Westminster confessing churches have rejected the theological distinctives of the Westminster Standards.

Although the Westminster Assembly produced a beautiful statement of soteriological Calvinism, the histories clearly demonstrate that soteriology was not the principle focus, nor chief interest, of the Assembly. The Westminster Assembly was primarily concerned with uniformity in worship (in accordance with the Regulative Principle), the form of church government (Presbyterianism jus divinum), and Church-State relations (the Establishment Principle). It is a sad irony that the great and distinctive attainments of the Westminster Assembly have been ignored and rejected by so many Westminster confessing churches.

However, we may yet entertain the hope that these great attainments are rejected largely because of ignorance. The best books on these subjects have not been readily available; but (thanks be to God) they are available again on the Puritan Hard Drive.

For anyone interested in recovering our Presbyterian and Reformed past, the Puritan Hard Drive is a must.

It is my hope and prayer that the Puritan Hard Drive will be used by God to bring to light the things that were hidden, to call to remembrance the things that were forgotten."

CHRISTMAS, REFORMED ICONOCLASM, THE SCRIPTURAL LAW OF WORSHIP & WE NEED A NEW WAR AGAINST THE IDOLS!

Christmas Defenders Refuted by Brian Schwertley (5 free MP3s)

A fantastic series refuting 'Protestants' on the road to Rome!
The first sermon in this important series exposes how some modern Protestants are leading people astray from biblical (Reformation) teaching on worship and holy days -- and right into the arms of Papal Antichrist! Schwertley mentions and/or convincingly refutes errors by James Jordan, Horne, Meyers, Strawbridge, Steve Schlissel, R.J. Gore, John Frame, Peter Leithart, Doug Wilson, and Norman Shepherd. Sadly, though a number of these men first headed toward Rome regarding worship they are now even polluting the doctrine of justification by faith alone, in a further step toward adopting Romish heresies. First they rejected sound teaching related to the second commandment (worship) and now are further apostatizing by promoting errors in opposition to the first commandment (on justification by faith alone). This message is must listening for everyone who who seeks to follow the Lord, as He has revealed Himself in Scripture, in all things. Remember that the Lord Jesus Christ said in John 14:15, "If ye love me, keep my commandments," and in Matthew 15:9, "But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men," -- then ask yourself, "Where in Scripture is Christ-mass keeping commanded by God"?

Days, Months, Seasons and Years by Brian Schwertley
This sermons sets forth the classic Puritan, Presbyterian and Reformation view of holy days against human inventions in the worship of God, including the liturgical calendar. This message also looks at and refutes some modern arguments by wayward Christians who try to justify what the Devil loves and Scripture condemns regarding holy days. It also upholds, based on the second and fourth commandments (or what is sometimes called the "Scriptural Law of Worship" or the "Regulative Principle of Worship"), the Lord's Day or Christian Sabbath. This MP3 also deals with the "adiaphora" or "things indifferent" argument and demonstrates who is really legalistic when the issue of holy days is debated.

Christian Opposition To Man-Made Holy Days (Christmas, Easter, etc.) by James Gilfillan

Christmas: Why Protestants Oppose Its Celebration by Evangelist

A Puritan Reformed Discussion of Holy Days (Lord's Day/Christian Sabbath, Christmas, Easter, etc.) by Greg Barrow

BLOG: DO DEMONS LOVE CHRISTMAS?
Shows how Satan loves his demon-inspired, man-made holy days, this instance being a clear example of one of the ways in which devils come as "angels of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14), feigning unscriptural religiosity to deceive the ignorant and scandalous.

When the church has been at her strongest these Papist/Pagan/demonic holy-days (Christmass, Easter, etc.) have been matters of discipline, as noted in the free online quotes at http://www.swrb.com/newslett/freebook/holyday.htm. These quotes also demonstrate that civil sanctions, in accord with Scripture, have at times also been enacted. For example,

"It was for this very reason that in Calvin's Geneva you could have been fined or imprisoned for celebrating Christmas. It was at the request of the Westminster Assembly that the English Parliament in 1644 passed an act forbidding the observance of Christmas, calling it a heathen holiday. In an appendix to their 'Directory for the Public Worship of God' the Westminster divines said: 'There is no day commanded in scripture to be kept holy under the gospel but the Lord's day, which is the Christian Sabbath. Festival days, vulgarly called 'Holy-days', having no warrant in the word of God, are not to be continued.' (See also, James Bannerman, The Church of Christ, Vol. I, pages 406-420). When the Puritans came to America they passed similar laws. The early New Englanders worked steadily through December 25, 1620, in studied neglect of the day. About 40 years later the General Court of Massachusetts decreed punishment for those who kept the season: '...anyone who is found observing, by abstinence from labor, feasting, or any other way, any such days as Christmas Day, shall pay for every such offense five shillings'" (Is Christmas Christian?, Schneider, http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualNLs/Xmas_ch2.htm).

Liturgical Antinomianism by Brian Schwertley (8 free MP3s) A series of sermons about how Roman Catholic idolatry enters Protestantism. This whole MP3 series contains very important messages about how Satan is corrupting the worship of God in our day, using men (like James Jordan, John Frame, Doug Wilson, Steve Schlissel, Jeffrey Meyers, Vern Poythress, et al.) who claim some connections to the Reformed faith, but who, in reality, teach principles of worship much closer to Rome and the Papacy than to the Reformation and the best Reformers. To find out why John Calvin would have excommunicated both John Frame and James Jordan, given the idolatrous nature of their beliefs and public teaching regarding worship, please see http://www.swrb.com/newslett/a ctualNLs/frameexc.htm. The free article, "A Warning Against the False and Dangerous Views of James Jordan Concerning Worship," is at http://www.swrb.com/newslett/a ctualNLs/blastjj.htm and will also expose more about the heresy and idolatry noted throughout Brian Schwertley's "must hear" MP3 series entitled "Liturgical Antinomianism." This series also contains many clues as to how Papal superstition (Roman Catholicism) and will worship (idolatry) is introduced into Protestant Churches. Sermon four is a much needed study refuting the nonsense, idolatry and heresy of James Jordan. More refuting James Jordan the can be found at http://www.swrb.com/newslett /freebook/refworsh.htm (search for "Jordan"). The following quote, from Kevin Reed's, The Canterbury Tales, is apropos,

In a Lutheran/Anglican posture, Mr. Jordan is asserting that the church has been granted broad discretionary power to establish means of worship. This is similar to the Anabaptist notions, which allow the 'moving of the Spirit' to govern the present activities of the church, without any direct appeal to the law of God. In both cases, the church has the power to worship God according to the devices of men. However, the Anabaptist opts for subjectivism (due to an emphasis on individualism); the other opts for traditionalism (with an emphasis on the corporate consensus). Yet, the law of God rejects both a subjective appeal (Deut. 12:8), and an appeal to the consensus (Deut. 12:30-31). Rather, the biblical admonition directs men to the scriptural pattern of worship (Deut. 12:32).

In sermon eight Brian Schwertley conclusively demonstrates how Jordan's views on worship are seriously flawed and how his writings "often show more charity toward Papists, than toward the Reformed faith" (p. 28,  Canterbury Tales by Kevin Reed).

What Fellowship Hath Christ and Belial? by Douglas W. Comin

An examination of the religious celebration of Christmas in light of the Scriptural duty of separation and the Regulative Principle of worship. Below is a quote from the article.

"The real meaning of Christmas is compromise - a sinful fusion between the worship of the true God and the worship of the pagan world that was instituted by a church which was not prepared to cast down the idols of the nations and burn the Asherah poles - or Yule logs - and enforce the pure worship of the God of the Bible. We must not join with them. We must not follow in the ways of Jeroboam, son of Nebat. We must not be yoked together with unbelievers. Let us reclaim instead the glory and delight of the Lord's Holy Day and learn to call the Sabbath a delight. Let us rejoice together in the precious sacrament which Jesus has given to His Church as a celebration of His life, death, and resurrection. And in doing these things we are promised a blessing from God: "Therefore, come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing and I will receive you and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God."

The Puritan Hard Drive is an exquisite piece of work.

The purchaser of this fine product will have at his fingertips more of the best Reformed literature than he can probably ever get around to reading.

Truly, if a Christian wants to invest wisely in his own growth, this is the best investment he can make at this time.

Your Voice and Worldwide Reformation!

Add Your Voice to the Growing Reformation Today!

Would you like to volunteer some of your time to read classic Puritan and Reformed books and sermons to MP3, to make permanent digital audio versions of the best Puritan and Reformed books for our generation and for posterity? If so, we then list the Puritan and Reformed MP3s you have read on the Web, to give them away for free to people in every nation of the world - and, by God's grace, we reach between 45,000 to over 100,000 people each month with these free Puritan and Reformation MP3s! You may listen to other readings, by people just like yourself (who love the Lord and want to reach others with the love of the Lord Jesus Christ and the truth of His holy Word, the Bible) at FREE PURITAN & REFORMATION MP3 AUDIO SERMONS/BOOKS and from our "Audio Book" section on SWRB's sermonaudio site. You may also use the FREE SWRB iPHONE, iPAD, iPOD (Touch) APP to listen. It is very easy to get started with your new international Reformation reading ministry, just email us at swrb@swrb.com requesting our "PURITAN and REFORMED BOOK READER INSTRUCTIONS." Thank you!

It may also be of interest to you to know that at SWRB we strive to use as much of the proceeds from sales, as is possible, to produce more free and discounted Puritan books, Reformation MP3s and Calvinistic videos. This is how, by God's grace, we have published so many books, MP3s and videos over the years (with a relatively small staff and the help of volunteers) and why we are able to distribute so much material for free and at such low prices - may our Lord get all the glory! With your continued prayers, support and purchases we will be able to reach even more people, in the future, all around the world with the truth of the Scriptures - using the latest and best technologies available, in the service of the Lord, to greatly multiply all the good that can be done, and aiming to fill the world with the best Christian (Puritan and Reformation) resources available (Acts 17:6).

"In the history of the church's sanctification I don't believe there has been a more valuable extra-biblical resource and tool than the Puritan Hard Drive... It holds some of the most priceless Reformed works of God-centered and Christ-glorifying truth that were ever penned." - Dr. Matthew McMahon, A Puritan's Mind

"To have that much information from a consistent, biblical, orthodox, and gospel-centered point of view is simply astonishing. Anyone who admires the Puritans simply must have the Puritan Hard Drive." - Dr. Voddie Baucham, Jr., Voddie Baucham Ministries

"The Puritan Hard Drive has been such a superb blessing to me personally and for my ministry, that I lack words to adequately praise the Lord!" - Richard Bennett (former Roman Catholic priest who is now a preacher of monergistic Reformation truth), Berean Beacon
