AFFILIATE-160x600-D.png"Get once your soul fraughted with the love of Christ, as a bird in the net, and all is well. Let fear and terror, and other winds blowing our sails stand by, for they shall never take the ship home. It is but a violent motion, and not perpetual... Law, fear, lust, gain, credit, and the like, bloweth us forward to obedience, causeth but a violent motion against the air; the wheels will wear and tire. But when our actions come from the love of God, as from a co-natural fountain, O! the motion is like the action of nature that is not forced. For the love of God is not a short breath, and it will not weary."

- Samuel Rutherford, Communion Sermons, p. 214 (on the Puritan Hard Drive)

- Thomas Brooks (on the Puritan Hard Drive)

"I call 'piety' that reverence joined with love of God which the knowledge of his benefits induces. For until men recognize that they owe everything to God, that they are nourished by his fatherly care, that he is the Author of their every good, that they should seek nothing beyond him -- they will never yield him willing service."

HUGH BINNING (COVENANTER, PROTESTER) ON CHRISTIAN LOVE (CHARITY)
Puritan-Hard-Drive-160x600-A.jpg "Charity (love - ed.) 'is not easily provoked.' This is the straight and solid firmness of it, that it is not soon moved with external impressions. It is long-suffering, it suffers long and much. It will not be shaken by violent and weighty pressures of injuries; where there is much provocation given, yet it is not provoked. Now to complete it, it is not easily provoked at light offences. It is strange how little a spark of injuries puts all in a flame, because our spirits are as gunpowder, -- so capable of combustion through corruption. How ridiculous, for the most part, are the causes of our wrath! For light things we are heavily moved, and for ridiculous things sadly, even as children who fall out among themselves for toys and trifles, or as beasts that are provoked upon the very show of a colour, as red or such like. We would save ourselves much labour, if we could judge before we suffer ourselves to be provoked. But now we follow the first appearance of wrong; and being once moved from without, we continue our commotion within, lest we should seem to be angry without a cause. But charity hath a more solid foundation. It dwells in God, for God is love; and so is truly great, truly high, and looks down with a steadfast countenance upon these lower things. The upper world is continually calm and serene. No clouds, no tempests there, no winds, nothing to disturb the harmonious and uniform motion: but it is this lower world that is troubled and tossed with tempests, and obscured with clouds. So a soul dwelling in God by love, is exalted above the cloudy region. He is calm, quiet, serene, and is not disturbed or interrupted in his motion of love to God or men."

Quotes On Loving God With the Whole Heart

250x250-Faded-Edwards-Blyth-Quote "Faith, again, has the power of working by love; it influences the affections towards God, and draws the heart after the best things. He that believes in God will beyond all question love God. Faith is an act of the understanding; but it also proceeds from the heart. "With the heart man believeth unto righteousness"; and hence God gives salvation to faith because it resides next door to the affections, and is near akin to love; and love is the parent and the nurse of every holy feeling and act. Love to God is obedience, love to God is holiness. To love God and to love man is to be conformed to the image of Christ; and this is salvation."

- Charles Spurgeon, All of Grace, p. 62 (emphases added), on the Puritan Hard Drive

250x250-Faded-Calvin-Haynes-Quote Study sincerity, Psalm 51:6. "Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward part." Be what you seem to be, be not like rowers in a barge, that look one way and row another. Do not look heaven-ward by your profession, and row hell-ward by your conversation; do not pretend to love God, and yet love sin: simulata sanctitus, duplicata iniquitas. Counterfeit piety is double iniquity. Let your hearts be upright with God: the plainer the diamond is, the richer it is; and the more plain the heart is, the more doth God value his jewel. A little rusty gold is far better than a great deal of bright brass. A little true grace, though rusted over with many infirmities, is better than all the glistering shews of hypocrites. A sincere heart is God's current coin, and he will give it grains of allowance.

250x250-Faded-Owen-Rhodes-Quote The Scriptures teach us that love is the sum of all that is contained in the law of God, and of all the duties required in his word. This the Scriptures teach of the law in general, and of each table of the law in particular. ... But whether we take the law as signifying only the ten commandments, or as including the whole written word of God, the Scriptures teach us that the sum of all that is required in it is love. Thus, when by the law is meant the ten commandments, it is said, in Rom. xiii. 8, "He that loveth another hath fulfilled the law;'' and therefore several of the commandments are rehearsed, and it is added, in the tenth verse that "love" (which leads us to obey them all) "is the fulfilling of the law." Now, unless love was the Sum of what the law requires, the law could not be wholly fulfilled in love; for a law is fulfilled only by obedience to the sum or whole of what it contains and enjoins. So the same apostle again declares (1 Tim. i. 5), "Now the end of the commandment is charity (love - ed.) out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned," &c. Or if we take the law in a yet more extensive sense, as the whole written word of God, the Scriptures still teach us, that love is the sum of all required in it. In Matt. xxii. 40, Christ teaches, that on the two precepts of loving God with all the heart, and our neighbour as ourselves, hang all the law and the prophets, i.e. all the written word of God; for what was then called the law and the prophets, was the whole written word of God that was then extant.

- Jonathan Edwards, Charity and Its Fruits - Sermon 1: All True Grace in the Heart Summed up in Charity, or Love, p. 6 (emphases added), on the Puritan Hard Drive

250x250-Faded-Rutherford-Wallace-Quote The Scriptures teach the same thing of each table of the law in particular. The command, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,' is declared by Christ (Matt. xxii. 38) to be the sum of the first table of the law, or the first great commandment; and in the next verse, to love our neighbour as ourself, is declared to be the sum of the second table; as it is also in Rom. xiii. 9, where the precepts of the second table of the law are particularly specified: and it is then added, "And if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." And so in Gal. v. 14 -- "For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." ...

The truth of the doctrine as shewn by the Scripture appears from this, that the apostle teaches us (Gal. v. 6) that "faith works by love." A truly Christian faith is that which produces good works; but all the good works which it produces are by love. By this, two things are evident to the present purpose:

First, That true love is an ingredient in true and living faith, and is what is most essential and distinguishing in it. Love is no ingredient in a merely speculative faith, but it is the life and soul of a practical faith. A truly practical or saving faith, is light and heat together, or rather light and love, while that which is only a speculative faith, is only light without heat; and, in that it wants spiritual heat or divine love, is in vain, and good for nothing. A speculative faith consists only in the ascent of the understanding; but in a saving faith there is also the consent of the heart; and that faith which is only of the former kind, is no better than the faith of devils, for they have faith so far as it can exist without love, believing while they tremble. Now, the true spiritual consent of the heart cannot be distinguished from the love of the heart. He whose heart consents to Christ as a Saviour, has true love to him as such. For the heart sincerely to consent to the way of salvation by Christ, cannot be distinguished from loving that way of salvation, and resting in it. There is an act of choice or election in true saving faith, whereby the soul chooses Christ its Saviour and portion, and accepts of and embraces him as such; but, as was observed before, an election or choice whereby it so chooses God and Christ, is an act of love -- the love of a soul embracing him as its dearest friend and portion.

250x250-Faded-Knox-Falconer-Quote Faith is a duty that God requires of every one. We are commanded to believe, and unbelief is a sin forbidden by God. Faith is a duty required in the first table of the law, and in the first command of that table; and therefore it will follow, that it is comprehended in the great commandment, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart," &c. and so it will follow that love is the most essential thing in a true faith. That love is the very life and spirit of a true faith, is especially evident from a comparison of this declaration of the apostle, that "faith works by love," and the last verse of the second chapter of the epistle of James, which declares, that "as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

The working, active, and acting nature of anything, is the life of it; and that which makes us call a thing alive, is, that we observe an active nature in it. This active, working nature in man, is the spirit which he has within him. And as his body without this spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. And if we would know what the working active thing in true faith is, the apostle tells us in Gal. v. 6, "Faith worketh by love." So that it is love which is the active working spirit in all true faith. This is its very soul, without which it is dead, as, in another form, he tells in the text, saying that faith, without charity or love is nothing, though it be to such a degree that it can remove mountains. And when he says, in the seventh verse of the context, that charity "believeth all things, and hopeth all things," he probably refers to the great virtues of believing and hoping in the truth and grace of God, to which he compares charity in other parts of the chapter, and particularly in the last verse, "Now abideth faith, hope, charity," &c. For in the seventh verse he gives the preference to charity or love, before the other virtues of faith and hope, because it includes them; for he says, "charity believeth all things, and hopeth all things;" so that this seems to be his meaning, and not merely, as it is vulgarly understood, that charity believeth and hopeth the best with regard to our neighbours. That a justifying faith, as a most distinguishing mark of Christianity, is comprehended in the great command of loving God, appears also, very plainly, from what Christ says to the Jews (John v. 40-43, &c.)

Dr. David Hindle Graphic Second, It is further manifest from this declaration of the apostle "that faith works by love," that all Christian exercises of the heart, and words of the life, are from love; for we are abundantly taught in the New Testament that all Christian holiness begins with faith in Jesus Christ. All Christian obedience is, in the Scriptures called the obedience of faith; as in Rom. xvi. 26, the gospel is said to be "made known to all nations for the obedience of faith." The obedience here spoken of is doubtless the same with that spoken of in the eighteenth verse of the preceding chapter, where Paul speaks of making "the Gentiles obedient by word and deed." And in Gal. ii. 20, he tells us, "the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God,' &c.; and we are often told that Christians, so far as they are Christians, "live by faith;" which is equivalent to saying that all gracious and holy exercises and virtues of the spiritual life are by faith. But how does faith work these things? Why, in this place in Galatians, it is expressly said, that it works whatsoever it does work by love. From which the truth of the doctrine follows, viz. that all that is saving and distinguishing in Christianity does radically consist, and is summarily comprehended, in love.

- Jonathan Edwards, Charity and Its Fruits - Sermon 1: All True Grace in the Heart Summed up in Charity, or Love, pp. 7-9 (emphases added), on the Puritan Hard Drive

A sincere heart serves God with the whole heart. First, he serves God with the heart. The hypocrite does but make a show of obedience. 'Thou art near in their mouth and far from their reins' (Jeremiah 12:2). There may be a fair complexion when the lungs and vitals are rotten. The hypocrite is fair to look on. He has a devout eye but a hollow heart. But he who is sincere, his inside is his best side. In the law God would have 'the inwards' offered up (Leviticus 4:11). A good Christian gives God 'the inwards'. When he prays his heart prays. 'Hannah prayed in her heart' (1 Samuel 1:13). In his thanksgiving the heart is the chief instrument of praise (Psalm 111:1). Then is the sweetest music when we 'make melody in our hearts to the Lord' (Ephesians 5:19).

John Hendryx (Monergism) Reviews & Recommends the Puritan Hard Drive Secondly, the sincere Christian serves God with the 'whole heart' (Psalm 119:2). Hypocrites have a double heart (Psalm 12:2). An heart for God and an heart for sin. 'Their heart is divided' (Hosea 10:2). God loves a broken heart, but not a divided heart. An upright heart is a whole heart. The full stream and torrent of the affections runs out after God. A sincere heart 'follows God fully' (Numbers 14:24). ...

A sincere heart is a suspicious heart. The hypocrite suspects others and has charitable thoughts of himself. The sincere Christian has charitable thoughts of others and suspects himself. He calls himself often to account: O my soul, have you any evidences for heaven? Are they not to seek when they should be to show? Is there no flaw in your evidences? You may mistake common for saving grace. Weeds in the corn-fields look like flowers. The foolish virgins' lamps looked as if they had oil in them. O my soul, is it not so with you? The man of sincere soul, being ever jealous, plays the critic upon himself and so traverses things in the court of conscience as if he were presently to be cited to God's bar. This is to be pure in heart. ...

A pure heart breathes after purity. If God should stretch out the golden sceptre and say to him, 'Ask, and it shall be given thee, to half the kingdom', he would say, 'Lord, a pure heart!' Let my heart have this inscription, 'Holiness to the Lord.' Let my heart be thy temple and do thou dwell in it. Lord, what should I do in heaven with this unholy heart? What converse could I have with God or angels? A gracious soul is so in love with purity that he prizes a pure heart above all blessings. ...

- Thomas Watson, The Beatitudes, p. 182-183 (emphases added), on the Puritan Hard Drive

GOOGLE-SOFTWARE-300x250-1C.jpg The underlying presupposition in giving our children what we call "a Christian education" is that as Christians we have a very distinct way of viewing all areas of life - distinct, that is, from unbelievers. We are to look at the world through God's eyes. We are to think God's thoughts, speak God's words, and perform God's deeds. And it is in the Bible where God's thoughts are made known. Therefore, there is nothing our children might be taught that can be taught in some "neutral" way as if that subject was not under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, or as if God had nothing at all to say about that subject. Jesus Christ is Lord of all -- Lord of all people, Lord of all creatures, Lord of all circumstances, and Lord of all knowledge (in Christ "are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" Col. 2:3). And dear ones, that is why God calls you to trust in the Lord with all your heart, and to "lean not unto thine own understanding" Prov. 3:5. In fact, we are to distrust our own understanding (cf. Prov. 3:7: "Do not be wise in thine own eyes"; Prov. 28:26: "He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool"; Is. 55:7-9: "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts", "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD."). Our understanding as finite and fallen creatures is not reliable about any subject, that is why we are not to acknowledge the Lord in some of our ways or even in most of our ways, but in all of our ways (Prov. 3:6).

Your Voice and Worldwide Reformation!

Add Your Voice to the Growing Reformation Today!

Would you like to volunteer some of your time to read classic Puritan and Reformed books and sermons to MP3, to make permanent digital audio versions of the best Puritan and Reformed books for our generation and for posterity? If so, we then list the Puritan and Reformed MP3s you have read on the Web, to give them away for free to people in every nation of the world - and, by God's grace, we reach between 45,000 to over 100,000 people each month with these free Puritan and Reformation MP3s! You may listen to other readings, by people just like yourself (who love the Lord and want to reach others with the love of the Lord Jesus Christ and the truth of His holy Word, the Bible) at FREE PURITAN & REFORMATION MP3 AUDIO SERMONS/BOOKS and from our "Audio Book" section on SWRB's sermonaudio site. You may also use the FREE SWRB iPHONE, iPAD, iPOD (Touch) APP to listen. It is very easy to get started with your new international Reformation reading ministry, just email us at swrb@swrb.com requesting our "PURITAN and REFORMED BOOK READER INSTRUCTIONS." Thank you!

It may also be of interest to you to know that at SWRB we strive to use as much of the proceeds from sales, as is possible, to produce more free and discounted Puritan books, Reformation MP3s and Calvinistic videos. This is how, by God's grace, we have published so many books, MP3s and videos over the years (with a relatively small staff and the help of volunteers) and why we are able to distribute so much material for free and at such low prices - may our Lord get all the glory! With your continued prayers, support and purchases we will be able to reach even more people, in the future, all around the world with the truth of the Scriptures - using the latest and best technologies available, in the service of the Lord, to greatly multiply all the good that can be done, and aiming to fill the world with the best Christian (Puritan and Reformation) resources available (Acts 17:6).

"In the history of the church's sanctification I don't believe there has been a more valuable extra-biblical resource and tool than the Puritan Hard Drive... It holds some of the most priceless Reformed works of God-centered and Christ-glorifying truth that were ever penned." - Dr. Matthew McMahon, A Puritan's Mind

"To have that much information from a consistent, biblical, orthodox, and gospel-centered point of view is simply astonishing. Anyone who admires the Puritans simply must have the Puritan Hard Drive." - Dr. Voddie Baucham, Jr., Voddie Baucham Ministries

"The Puritan Hard Drive has been such a superb blessing to me personally and for my ministry, that I lack words to adequately praise the Lord!" - Richard Bennett (former Roman Catholic priest who is now a preacher of monergistic Reformation truth), Berean Beacon

"The power of prayer has never been tried to its full capacity in any church. If we want to see mighty wonders of divine grace and power wrought in the place of weakness, failure and disappointment, let the whole Church answer God's standing challenged; "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knows not."
