In refuting this "impendent pestilentious cloud of heathenish and hellish darkness, which the devil by the ministry of these locust (i.e. the Quakers - RB) hath now exhaled out of the bottomless pit," Brown of Wamphray has almost put together a kind of systematic theology and commentary on the doctrines of the Westminster Confession of Faith combined.

Authoring books like this, it is easy to see why Brown has been considered "the most important theologian of this period" (Johnston, Treasury of the Scottish Covenant, p. 340). For it has been noted that "the exiled minister of Wamphray was as copious in Latin as in English" (Ibid., p. 341); just his De Causa Dei Contra Antisabbatarios (considered his Magnum opus), wherein he defends the Christian Sabbath, "is larger than all the published works of Dr. W. Cunningham put together" (Ibid.).
