Resource Description: This book contains an outline of the history of this doctrine in the church (from the Old Testament to the author's day), as well as a lengthy exposition of it from Scripture. 520 pages, indexed. "The doctrine of justification by faith is like Atlas: it bears a world on its shoulders, the entire evangelical knowledge of saving grace. The doctrines of election, of effectual calling, regeneration, and repentance, of adoption, of prayer, of the church, the ministry, and the sacraments, have all to be interpreted and understood in light of justification by faith. When justification falls, all true knowledge of the grace of God in human life falls with it, and then, as Luther said, the church itself falls," states (the) "Introductory Essay." The introduction continues, "It is doubtful whether a better exposition of it (justification) exists. And his (Buchanan's) preacher's style imparts a warmth to his writing which we do not find in (say) the lawyer-like Cunningham, and which is very refreshing. There is no doubt that this is still the best text-book on its subject, from the standpoint of the classic covenant theology, that the student can find." -- "James Buchanan's 'Doctrine of Justification' is THE classic work on this cardinal doctrine by which a church stands or falls. After lucidly covering the historical development of the doctrine through the Old Testament, the apostolic age, the scholastic divines, the Reformation and Counter Reformation, and in the Church of England, Buchanan expounds the doctrine itself by covering the scriptural meaning of the term, its relation to the law and justice of God, its relation to the mediatorial work of Christ, its relation to grace and works, and more. The chapter on justification in relation to the work of the Holy Spirit is alone worth the price of the book. Throughout, Buchanan systematizes the doctrine of justification in an orthodox Reformed manner that is fully reliable, is consistent with all the doctrines of grace, and is still relevant to the burning issues of our day ... If you can only afford to read one book on justification, read this definitive work." - Dr. Joel R. Beeke.
- "Those whom God effectually calls, He also freely justifies; not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous; not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's sake alone; nor by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness; but by imputing the obedience and satisfaction of Christ unto them, they receiving and resting on Him and His righteousness by faith; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God... God does continue to forgive the sins of those that are justified; and although they can never fall from the state of justification, yet they may, by their sins, fall under God's fatherly displeasure, and not have the light of His countenance restored unto them, until they humble themselves, confess their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance. The justification of believers under the Old Testament was, in all these respects, one and the same with the justification of believers under the New Testament." - The Westminster Confession of Faith, Of Justification, Chapter 11:1,5,6, Original Edition, 1647, on the Puritan Hard Drive

"Too horrible to imagine! The most chilling narration that I have ever heard. Words fail me in how much I would encourage anyone who is delaying repentance to listen to this sermon! Attend to your soul while there is time!" - Comment on SermonAudio. Actual testimonies of persons dying without hope, without a saving faith in Christ. Includes the testimonies of Louis XV and Lord Chesterfield. Written in 1852; read by Tom Sullivan.
Dying testimonies of many who opposed Christians and the Bible such as Voltaire and others. Written in 1852.

"And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." - Matthew 25:46 (KJV)
The fate of Spira. Speculation about the end of Spira vastly differs. Is John Calvin right when he wrote, "In order that God may remove brutish insensibility, he sometimes exhibits such prodigies to compel us to feel, even while we continue to sleep." Or was William Perkins (1558-1602) correct who wrote, "Oft it will fall out that the conscience of God's child shall be so exceedingly tormented in temptation, that he shall cry out, he is forsaken of God, and shall be damned; when as indeed he still remains the dear child of God." The narrative of Spire is quoted in Bunyan's Grace Abounding. Man knows the beginning of sin, but who bounds the issues thereof. Is there another explanation, to deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus (1 Cor.5:5). This extended history may assist you to come to your own conclusion. - Thomas Sullivan (the narrator)

- "I am as sure as I am of the fact of Christ's reign that a comprehensive and centralized system of national education, separated from religion, as is now commonly proposed, will prove the most appalling enginery for the propagation of antiChristian and atheistic unbelief and of antisocial nihilistic ethics, social and political, which this sinrent world has ever seen." - Dr. A.A. "Christ is the very essence of all delights and pleasures, the very soul and substance of them. I can see little consistency in a type of Christian activity which preaches the gospel on the street corners and and at the ends of earth, but neglects the children of the covenant by abandoning them to a cold and unbelieving secularism. - J. Gresham Machen

The anti-Christian leaven, which has been so extensively diffused, shall be purged out of both the churches and the nations. Every usurper of the rights and prerogatives of Sion's King shall be pushed from his seat. Every rival kingdom shall be overthrown. The civil and ecclesiastical constitutions of the earth shall be regulated by the infallible standard of God's word; their office-bearers, of every kind, shall acknowledge the authority of Messiah the Prince; and the greatest kings on earth shall cast their crowns at his feet. All enemies shall be put under his feet; and such as resist the melting influence of his grace, shall be crushed beneath the iron rod of his power. By spiritual conversion or judicial destruction, he shall effect the entire subjugation of the globe. And, at the last, there shall not be a spot on the face of the habitable earth where the true church of Christ shall not have effected a footing, nor a single tribe of the vast family of man which shall not have felt the meliorating and blissful influence of Christian laws and institutions. - William Symington, Messiah the Prince or, The Mediatorial Dominion of Jesus Christ (Still Waters Revival Books, [1884] 1990), pp. 185-86, on the Puritan Hard Drive.
