It would be wise imitating Hezekiah, Josiah, Luther, Calvin and the Lord Jesus Christ in the achievement of immediate reformation. Compromise is a lie. Gradual reformation in this regard is intolerable; both for the people of God who are deceived as to what real reformation and truth are about, and to the minister who compromises his beliefs, and neglects the honor of God's desire in true spiritual worship."

John Calvin
"If it be inquired, then, by what things chiefly the Christian religion has a standing existence amongst us, and maintains its truth, it will be found that the following two not only occupy the principal place, but comprehend under them all the other parts, and consequently the whole substance of Christianity: this is, a knowledge, first, of the mode in which God is duly worshipped; and, secondly, of the source from which salvation is to be obtained. When these are kept out of view, though we may glory in the name Christians, our profession is empty and vain. After these come the sacraments and the government of the church."

- John Calvin, The Necessity of Reforming the Church, Presbyterian Heritage Publications, 1544, reprinted 1995, p. 15.

"For God is not worshiped of us, but when it is his will to accept our worship: and it is not his will to accept our worship, but when it is according to his will."

Biblical Worship Kevin Reed Book Cover.jpg
Biblical Worship
Biblical Worship by Kevin Reed (Free Book)

Written with a clear view of upholding the biblical tradition of Reformation worship -- with the life and death struggle that was a backdrop to the Reformers war against the idols clearly in mind. Touches on a number of controversial issues that have arisen as human innovations in worship have become commonplace in contemporary church life -- even among those that still fancy being known as Reformed.

Foundation For Reformation: The Regulative Principle Of Worship - Greg L. Price (Free Book)

"Two essential questions concerning worship have been debated for hundreds of years by churches. The first question asks: How is God to be worshipped? That is, what is the proper and acceptable way to worship God? Even kings of the earth have their "protocol" as to the manner in which they are to be approached. In the ancient world, to violate that protocol could jeopardize one's life. For example, one appearing in the court of King Ahasueras (cf. the book of Esther) could literally lose his life if he failed to follow the acceptable protocol. Is it then strange to consider that if earthly kings who rule by God's authority and are His ministers of justice demand such honor that the King of kings Himself should be treated with less honor? For He too has a "protocol" as to how He must be approached and worshipped by His people.

The second question asks: What are the limits of authority possessed by church officers in imposing liturgical forms of worship on members of a church? That is, when a church gathers to worship God and church officers lead the congregation in the worship of God, how far can elders legitimately go in establishing various forms of worship for the congregation?

Let me illustrate the importance of these questions. Today we are celebrating together the Lord's Supper which is an element within the worship of God and a glorious means of God's grace to His people. But suppose before receiving the Lord's Supper each one were given a straight pin, and I insisted that each of you prick your finger as an aid to your understanding that when Christ died for you He suffered for you. The slight pain you might feel in the prick of the finger is simply a finite reminder of the infinite pain Christ suffered as He bore the infinite wrath of an absolutely holy God. My intentions might be sincere, but is such an act of worship acceptable to God? Do I have the legitimate authority to introduce what I consider to be profitable into the worship of the Most High God? Such is the rationale for the introduction of many practices into a worship service. One can well imagine that if such a man-made tradition of pricking oneself before the Lord's Supper should be practiced within a church that in all probability it could become an actual element of worship within many churches one hundred years from now. In like manner, one of the man-made traditions that had been instituted in sixteenth century England insisted that each communicant in the Lord's Supper come forward and kneel before the elements out of reverence for Christ's atoning death. One could literally multiply such instances of human innovation in the worship of God. The essential questions that must be asked about all such human invention in divine worship are these: Will God receive such sincere yet innovative acts into His worship? Is it within my authority as a minister of Jesus Christ to compel you to worship God in a way which I believe will promote your spiritual growth in Christ?"

- From: Foundation For Reformation: The Regulative Principle Of Worship - Greg L. Price

The Regulative Principle of Worship is God's ordained law for worship... You see there is no neutrality in the way in which we approach God in worship. Either we approach the living God according to His revealed Word (i.e. the Regulative Principle of Worship), or we approach Him according to our revealed word. Someone's word is going to expressly guide us in worship. The only question is, whose word will guide us? God's or man's?

A Review and Commentary upon Worship in Spirit and Truth, a book by John Frame. Kevin Reed shows how John Frame has abandoned the Reformation, both scripturally and confessionally, in regard to worship. He also gives an excellent summary of historic Reformed views and then contrasts them with the novel idolatrous ideas now being touted by John Frame.

Sadly, most Protestant churches (and even churches Reformed in their soteriology) are often closer to Rome than the Reformation in their public worship, practicing such Roman Catholic innovations in public worship as signing man-made hymns (rather than the using the "hymn book" God has provided in Scripture, and singing Psalms), using musical instruments (a practice abrogated, in public worship, with the rest of the ceremonial law with the coming of Christ), and keeping Popish holy days like Christmas and Easter (which violates the second and fourth commandments).

"Hymns of human composition are used so commonly now in public worship by Presbyterian churches that it is difficult to believe that the practice is not a hundred years old (in 1883 - ed.), and that in some of the churches it is of very recent date. On the supposition that it is good and dutiful and wise to sing such hymns in worship, it is equally difficult to account for the neglect of the churches at the time of the Reformation, and for generations afterwards. What could have so blinded the reformers as to make them reject hymns and sing the Psalms alone? How could the Westminster Divines, in framing their Confession of Faith and Directory for Worship, have been so unanimous in the blunder that the service of praise is to consist of the 'singing of Psalms?' And apart from the aspect of duty, how could the Presbyterian churches, for about a hundred and fifty or two hundred years after the Westminster Assembly, have been so insensible to the power of hymns as an attractive addition to their public services? We cannot by any means understand how it was that, if it was dutiful to use hymns in worship, the reformers did not discover the Scriptural warrant for the duty, especially as hymns had been used for centuries by the Church of Rome. Nor can we understand how they rejected the hymns and used the Psalms alone, unless on the supposition that they believed the use of hymns to be part of the will-worship of Rome. If they were wrong on this point, then Rome and our modern Presbyterian churches are right. In that case, the Puritans and Covenanters were fanatics, and Romanists were truly enlightened! And most of our Presbyterian churches of the present day were fanatical too, and did not become truly enlightened and liberal till they got back to the Romish practice!" - James Dick, Hymns and Hymn Books (1883)

Introductory Essay to John Knox's True and False Worship by Kevin Reed
Kevin Reed writes that "[t]he Protestant Reformation was a conflict over many critical issues. Of all the issues contested between Romanists and Reformers, no issue was more crucial than the question of true worship. John Knox displayed a preeminent concern for worship. Throughout his ministry, the Reformer proclaimed the scriptural law of worship: all forms of worship [and all religious ceremonies] must possess clear scriptural warrant, if they are to be admitted as valid means of worship. This concept has subsequently been called the regulative principle of worship, because it regulates our approach to God in worship." This introductory essay shows how " [t]he example of Knox stands as a sharp rebuke to Christians in the present day. It illustrates the need to think about our worship."
Discusses the very foundation of all faithful public worship. Dovetails splendidly with John Calvin's Necessity of Reforming the Church . Cites numerous examples from Reformation history (Calvin, Knox, Owen, the Westminster Divines, etc.) exhibiting the Reformation consensus regarding the basis of biblical faithfulness in this area. A good short, easy-reading introduction to this topic.

Discusses Reformed worship-song in the context of the regulative principle of worship (Sola Scriptura in Worship). Defends exclusive Psalmody from Scripture and the writings and testimony of the most prominent Reformers.

Gradual Reformation Intolerable: A Brief Inquiry into the Actions of Luther and the Writings of Calvin in Reforming the Church Against False Teaching and False Worship. by Dr. C. Matthew McMahon

"Gradual reformation is not the matrix in which the church has functioned since its inception in the Garden of Eden...

The Epistle to the Reader of the Westminster Confession of Faith

John Calvin Color Graphic
John Calvin

Of course, the differences between the Papists and the Protestants produced a colossal struggle over the doctrine of justification. Calvin's response to Sadoleto illustrates this conflict in a pointed manner,[2] as well as major portions of The Necessity of Reforming the Church.

Nevertheless, the battle over justification was not the only struggle between the reformers and Rome. Calvin declares the wider scope of the Reformation: the need to restore biblical doctrine and practice regarding the proper means of worship, the correct administration of the sacraments, and the government of the church.

Unfortunately, in many churches today, the Reformed faith is equated merely with the "five points of Calvinism," or some other truncated portrayal of the reformer's theology. In Calvin's tract, we get the bigger picture.

In setting forth the necessity of reformation, Calvin defends Protestants against the charge of schism. Whenever men lift a voice for reform, corrupt religious leaders defame the reformers as schismatics, and corrupt assemblies appropriate to themselves the name of the church. Calvin replies: "It is not enough, therefore, simply to throw out the name of church, but judgment must be used to ascertain which is the true church, and what is the nature of its unity." Further, "any man, who, by his conduct, shows that he is an enemy of sound doctrine, whatever title he may meanwhile boast, has lost all title to authority in the church."

Calvin rebukes the spirit of toleration which masquerades as "moderation." The reformer states:

In a corruption of sound doctrine so extreme, in a pollution of the sacraments so nefarious, in a condition of the church so deplorable, those who maintain that we ought not to have felt so strongly, would have been satisfied with nothing less than a perfidious tolerance, by which we should have betrayed the worship of God, the glory of Christ, the salvation of men, the entire administration of the sacraments, and the government of the church. There is something specious in the name of moderation, and tolerance is a quality which has a fair appearance, and seems worthy of praise; but the rule which we must observe at all hazards is, never to endure patiently that the sacred name of God should be assailed with impious blasphemy; that his eternal truth should be suppressed by the devil's lies; that Christ should be insulted, his holy mysteries polluted, unhappy souls cruelly murdered, and the church left to writhe in extremity under the effect of a deadly wound. This would be not meekness, but indifference about things to which all others ought to be postponed.

The perceptive reader will see many parallels between the spiritual climate of Calvin's day and the religious chaos in our own society. If religious corruptions required reformation then, similar corruptions demand serious reform today. We witness the sad spectacle of Protestant churches fascinated with liturgical rites and innovations in worship. Prominent "evangelical" leaders have endorsed a peace pact with Rome.[3] Many "reformed" denominations tolerate evangelistic methods and gimmicks built upon Pelagian presuppositions. If anything, Calvin's tract demonstrates how far modern Protestants have declined from the doctrines and practices of the Reformation.

The Necessity of Reforming the Church is more than just an historic monument to the Reformation. It is a spiritual manifesto, calling us to repentance in an era of gross religious corruption.

- Kevin Reed, Publisher's Introduction to John Calvin's The Necessity of Reforming the Church

OF THE SECOND COMMANDMENT by Thomas Boston (excerpted from Thomas Boston's Commentary on the Shorter Catechism)

"In the first chapter, we examined the biblical doctrine of redemption, and we saw that both Roman Catholics and evangelicals have departed from the scriptural understanding of the Protestant Reformation. In this chapter we will examine scriptural principles of worship, and use them to measure the worship practices of both Rome and present-day evangelicalism." - Kevin Reed

Christmas: An Historical Survey Regarding Its Origins and Opposition to It of Creeds and Confessions by Kevin Reed

"'That God's word damns your ceremonies, it is evident; for the plain and straight commandment of God is, 'Not that thing which appears good in thy eyes, shalt thou do to the Lord thy God, but what the Lord thy God has commanded thee, that do thou: add nothing to it; diminish nothing from it.' Now unless that ye are able to prove that God has commanded your ceremonies, this his former commandment will damn both you and them.' With this understanding of worship, the Scottish Church cast out a multitude of the monuments of idolatry which were part of papal worship; graven images, the Mass, false sacraments, Romish liturgical ceremonies, and Roman bishops were all removed from the Church. Ecclesiastical holidays were also expelled from the Church of Scotland." - Kevin Reed, Christmas:An Historical Survey Regarding Its Origins and Opposition to It.

"... by communicating with idolaters in their rites and ceremonies, we ourselves become guilty of idolatry; even as Ahaz, 2 Kings 16:10, was an idolater, eo ipso, that he took the pattern of an altar from idolaters. Forasmuch, then, as kneeling before the consecrated bread, the sign of the cross, surplice, festival days (like Christmas, Easter, etc.-ed.), bishopping, bowing down to the altar, administration of the sacraments in private places, etc., are the wares of Rome, the baggage of Babylon, the trinkets of the whore, the badges of Popery, the ensigns of Christ's enemies, and the very trophies of antichrist, -- we cannot conform, communicate and symbolise with the idolatrous Papists in the use of the same, without making ourselves idolaters by participation. Shall the chaste spouse of Christ take upon her the ornaments of the whore? Shall the Israel of God symbolise with her who is spiritually called Sodom and Egypt? Shall the Lord's redeemed people wear the ensigns of their captivity? Shall the saints be seen with the mark of the beast? Shall the Christian church be like the antichristian, the holy like the profane, religion like superstition, the temple of God like the synagogue of Satan?" George Gillespie, A Dispute Against English Popish Ceremonies, volume one, p. 80.

Dr. Reg Barrow answers five questions that Doug Wilson has been repeating in opposition to the classic, creedal, Presbyterian and Reformed understanding of the regulative principle of worship. Excerpted from: Saul in the Cave of Adullam: A Testimony Against the Fashionable Sub-Calvinism of Doug Wilson (Editor of Credenda/Agenda Magazine); and, for Classical Protestantism and the Attainments of the Second Reformation.

Instrumental Music in Public Worship: The Views of John Calvin by John Calvin and John Girardeau

Calvin's position on music is one application of his theology of worship. Calvin's view of music focuses most sharply the differences between Calvin and many contemporary evangelicals, even those who would call themselves Reformed. - From http://reformedbaptistfellowship.org/2010/02/12/calvin-and-the-worship-of-god/

"But the acceptable way of worshiping the true God is instituted by himself, and so limited by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshipped according to the imaginations and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation, or any other way not prescribed in the holy Scripture." - Westminster Confession of Faith, Of Religious Worship, and the Sabbath Day, Chapter 21:1, 1647, Original Edition.

Instrumental Music in Public Worship: The Heresy of Instrumental Music by John Girardeau

Paedocommunion: A Biblical Examination by Brian Schwertley

The doctrine of paedocommunion logically rests upon a materialistic, magical, mystical, irrational, superstitious understanding of the Lord's supper. All the Reformed symbols reject the idea that the bread and wine have intrinsic power to change the soul, that people who consume the eucharist are automatically transformed (ex opere operato). Such a view is usually based on the Romanist doctrine of the real presence or transubstantiation of the elements (i.e., the bread literally becomes Jesus body, the wine literally becomes Christ's blood.) Sadly, the doctrine of paedocommunion has led many professing Christians to the apostate and heretical Eastern Orthodox Church.

What makes paedocommunionism so dangerous is its tendency to allow the leaven of Romanism into Reformed churches. It is not an accident that some of the champions of paedocommunion want people to reject the attainments of the Reformation with regard to worship and justification in favor of a more Romish medieval conception of these doctrines. Paedocommunion can be and, sadly, already has been a conduit to mysticism, Romanism and Eastern Orthodoxy for a number of poor deluded souls. Thus, let us hold fast to the doctrinal attainments of our covenanted reformation not because we have a love of tradition, but because they (the Reformed Symbols) are excellent expressions of scriptural teaching

The Regulative Principle in Worship: A brief article. by Dr. C. Matthew McMahon

Christmas Is Part Of Roman Catholic (Papacy/Antichrist) Missionary Strategy And High-Handed Idolatry

Christmas was not celebrated by the apostolic church. It was not celebrated during the first few centuries of the church. As late as A.D. 245, Origen (Hom. 8 on Leviticus) repudiated the idea of keeping the birthday of Christ, "as if he were a king Pharaoh." By the middle of the 4th century, many churches in the Latin west were celebrating Christmas. During the 5th century, Christmas became an official Roman Catholic holy day. In A.D. 534, Christmas was recognized as an official holy day by the Roman state.

The reason that Christmas became a church holy day has nothing to do with the Bible. The Bible does not give the date of Christ's birth. Nowhere in the Bible are we commanded to celebrate Christmas. Christmas (as well as many other pagan practices) was adopted by the Roman church as a missionary strategy.

DO DEMONS LOVE CHRISTMAS? - Mather, Calvin's Geneva, the Westminster Assembly, American Puritans ...
"I would to God that every holy day whatsoever besides the Lord's day were abolished. That zeal which brought them first in, was without all warrant of the Word, and merely followed corrupt reason, forsooth to drive out the holy days of the pagans, as one nail drives out another. Those holy days have been so tainted with superstitions that I wonder we tremble not at their very names. - William Ames.

MERRY CHRISTMAS SAYS THE ANTICHRIST... THE POPE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR CELEBRATING...
"And next in particular, concerning festival days findeth that in the explication of the first head of the first book of discipline it was thought good that the feasts of Christmas, Circumcision, Epiphany, with the feasts of the Apostles, Martyrs, and Virgin Mary be utterly abolished because they are neither commanded nor warranted by Scripture and that such as observe them be punished by Civil Magistrates. Here utter abolition is craved and not reformation of abuses only and that because the observation of such feasts have no warrant from the word of God. - The Acts of the General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland, December 10, Session 17, 1638, pp. 37-38.

Increase Mather's Testimony Against that Prophane and Superstitious Custom of Christ-mass Keeping.
Against profane Christ-mass-keeping. In the Apostolical Times the Feast of the Nativity was not observed. The very name of Christmass savours of superstition. It can never bee proved that Christ was born on December 25. It is most probable that the Nativity was in September. The New-Testament allows of no stated Holy-day but the Lords-day. Objections answered. It was in compliance with the Pagan Saturnalia that Christ-mass Holy-days were first invented. The manner of Christ-mass-keeping, as generally observed, is highly dishonourable to the Name of Christ.

"The nearer a false worship approaches to a true one, the more dangerous it is. Israel came nearer to the true worship of God than the heathens: now the prophet saith not, Though the heathens be idolators, yet let not Judah be so too; but, "Though Israel play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend." There was more danger that Judah should be drawn aside by Israel, than that they should be drawn aside by any of the heathen. And so there is more danger that we, at this day, should be drawn aside by those that join with us in many things that are right, than by papists, who are hateful to us, and whose ways we see to be abominable. There is not so much danger, especially for those that profess godliness, of being drawn aside by those who grossly violate the laws of God, as by brethren that join with us in many things that are right, and come very near to the true worship of God... We must not approach places calculated to draw us into sin, especially to false worship... It is dangerous to indulge curiosity in visiting places of idolatry."

Paul Washer Small Color Graphic  "In the history of extra-biblical study and research tools there has never before been a resource as useful as the Puritan Hard Drive. Having the Puritan Hard Drive is like owning the largest Puritan and Reformed Library in the world along with a full time research assistant with his PhD in Puritan Studies from Oxford or Cambridge. With the click of a button, you can easily do ten hours worth of research in just seconds! Imagine not only owning the largest Puritan and Reformed library, but having a full-time team of world-class research assistants at your beck and call.It is almost as if God is saying, 'Here is a tool that will lead you to more truth faster than ever before. Make the best possible use of it and bring much glory to My Name.' (2 Timothy 2:15, Ephesians 5:16). The Puritan Hard Drive is a tremendous blessing." - Pastor Paul Washer, HeartCry Missionary Society (click here to see Paul Washer's full review of the Puritan Hard Drive

Dr, Voddie Baucham Graphic 60 pct."To have that much information from a consistent, biblical, orthodox, and gospel-centered point of view is simply astonishing. Anyone who admires the Puritans simply must have the Puritan Hard Drive."

"As a member of the HeartCry Missionary Society, I am witness to the great needs of Christians throughout the globe. Possibly the greatest need is sound Christian literature. Even though many Third World pastors read English, they have very few good books available to them. Even if we could afford to buy each indigenous minister a small library, the cost of shipping would be astronomical. With the Puritan Hard Drive we can provide pastors throughout the globe with one of the most complete Puritan and Reformed libraries at a fraction of the cost." - Pastor Paul Washer, HeartCry Missionary Society (click here to see Paul Washer's full review of the Puritan Hard Drive)
