If God Is So Powerful and So Good, Why Do Bad Things Happen? by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free Video)

Adapting to the Culture... Or Not by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free Video)

Dr. Voddie Baucham speaks on Paul's interaction with the Athenian culture in Acts 17 and whether or not he was trying to adapt to it or proclaim to it.

The Supremacy of Christ in Truth in a Postmodern World by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free Video, 9:45 Clip)

The Supremacy of Christ in Truth in a Postmodern World by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free MP3, Full Sermon)

Every human being is asking, has asked, or will ask these questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What is wrong with the world? and Can what is wrong be made right? It is very important that Christians not only answer these questions, but answer them in a manner that distinguishes the Christian worldview from all others. Paul gives us a model for doing so in Colossians chapter one.

Homeschooling - The Children of Caesar by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Short Free Video)

If Caesar educates our children why are we surprised that they come home as Romans?

A Biblical Defense of the Resurrection of Christ by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free MP3)

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a Cardinal doctrine of the Christian faith. According the Paul's argument in 1 Corinthians 15, those who deny the resurrection have denied Christianity. There is no Christianity without the resurrection. Paul offers three arguments; the argument from authority, the argument from evidence, and the argument from logic, to refute those who deny the resurrection while attempting to embrace Christianity.

Nebuchadnezzar Loses His Mind & the Dangers of Psychology and Psychiatry (Daniel 1-6) by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free MP3)

It is difficult to go through Daniel chapter 4 without realizing that, in our day and time, Nebuchadnezzar would have been diagnosed with some type of mental disorder, medicated to the point of absurdity, and put in an institution with little or no hope of returning to a normal life. But, what is the Biblical view of mental health? How should we as Christians (and especially Pastors) look at the "mental health" industry? In this sermon, Pastor Voddie gives a Biblical look at these issues.

Voddie Baucham Talks about homeschooling our children (Good News Talk Show 38) - Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free Video)

"I have made no secret of the fact that I believe the American school system is inferior in terms of academics, bankrupt in terms of morality, and corrosive in terms of spirituality and religion. In short, the government education system is no place for the children of people who claim allegiance to the King of Kings." - Dr. Voddie Baucham

"It is impossible to separate one's view of God, man, truth, knowledge, and ethics from the educational process. Every day that our children sit behind a desk, they are either being taught to know, love, and obey God or they are being taught to love and obey someone or something that has usurped God's proper role." - Dr. Voddie Baucham

Tolerating the Intolerable by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free MP3)

The charge against the church at Thyatira was that some of them tolerated the idolatry and immorality that their culture practiced. But couldn't they have compromised just a little in order to be a witness for Christ?

The Doctrine of Total Depravity by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free MP3)

Do you struggle with the doctrine of Total Depravity? This doctrine is not something to be feared. Rather, it is a doctrine that is taught throughout the Bible. In Romans chapter three, the Apostle Paul uses scripture from the Old Testament to reveal the full effect of the fall of man. In this sermon, Dr. Voddie Baucham explains the four divisions in Romans 3:9-18:

1. The Universal Nature of Sin
2. Sin touches every aspect of our being
3. Sin affects how we live together
4. There is a sin that we can't see

The Consequences of Feminism by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free Video)

"Evangelicals in America are not pro-life, they're just anti-abortion, ... just look at our birth-rates" - Dr. Voddie Baucham

Brokenness (Psalm 51) by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free MP3)

"Your sermon of the week is Brokenness by Voddie Baucham. This is a powerful message on King David's brokenness that you won't want to miss (unless of course you're a Rob Bell fan or like the book The Shack since Baucham pulls no punches on these conduits of false doctrine). This is one of Baucham's best messages and I encourage all DefCon readers to download this one." - Defending. Contending.

Polishing the Outside of the Cup by Dr. Voddie Baucham (Free MP3)

The charge against the church at Sardis was that, in spite of their good reputation, they were dead. Unfortunately, if we are honest, this is what we usually wish for our culture, our churches, and our kids. How do we approach these things without simply polishing the outside of the cup?

DR. VODDIE BAUCHAM REVIEWS AND RECOMMENDS THE PURITAN HARD DRIVE

"I want you to know that I have enjoyed my Puritan Hard Drive immensely.

I simply could not have imagined such a resource before getting my hands on it!

To have that much information from a consistent, biblical, orthodox, and gospel-centered point of view is simply astonishing!

Anyone who admires the Puritans simply must have the Puritan Hard Drive.

From Pastors to Ph.D. candidates, there is simply nothing else out there that puts so much at your fingertips.

What an amazing tool for pastors... thank you for your work.

Soli Deo Gloria!"

A LATER COMMENT:

"I actually need to buy another Puritan Hard Drive! I was in Zambia showing it to Conrad Mbewe (the Spurgeon of Africa) and he absolutely fell in love with it. I simply had to leave it there.

It is a valuable tool, and I meant everything I said about it.

All of our guys love it.

We'll probably start buying them for our interns and leadership/elder training students as well.

Soli Deo Gloria!"

"I am as sure as I am of the fact of Christ's reign that a comprehensive and centralized system of national education, separated from religion, as is now commonly proposed, will prove the most appalling enginery for the propagation of antiChristian and atheistic unbelief and of antisocial nihilistic ethics, social and political, which this sin rent world has ever seen." - Dr. A.A. "In the great spiritual warfare the forces of darkness are organized against the Lord and his anointed. Any organization that claims to be neutral, as do the public schools and some labor organizations, is by that token denying Christ's claims of absolute lordship over all things. As such they are serving the cause of the antichrist. To deny this is either willful blindness or woeful ignorance of the devil's devices and the claims of Christ." - Cornelius Van Til.

"The excuses for taking the short term "easy" road of public education are legion among Christians. They range from 'I can offset the public school's influence by teaching my children at home between lunch and after school' (which only admits of guilt, while at the same time begging the question), to the always present 'I don't have the time' or 'I can't afford it' (though large mortgages, new cars, televisions, etc., are easily affordable). Eternity will witness the damage that such a selfish and ungodly agenda produces." - Dr. Reg Barrow, "Godless Public Education and Sin", free at http://www.swrb.com/newslett/actualNLs/CRTPublicEd.htm.

Voddie Baucham Talks about homeschooling our children (Good News Talk Show 38)

"Obviously the schools are not Christian. Just as obviously they are not neutral. The scriptures say that the fear of the Lord is the chief part of knowledge; but the schools, by omitting all reference to God, give the pupils the notion that knowledge can be had apart from God. They teach in effect that God has no control of history, that there is no plan of events that God is working out, that God does not foreordain whatsoever comes to pass... the public schools are not, never were, can never be, neutral. Neutrality is impossible. Let one ask what neutrality can possibly mean when God is involved. How does God judge the school system which says to him, 'O God, we neither deny nor assert thy existence; and O God, we neither obey nor disobey thy commands; we are strictly neutral... The big lie of the public schools is that the God of the Bible is irrelevant. The textbooks never mention Him. Everyone assumes that children do not need to know anything about God, God's law, and God's Word in order to become educated people. This is Satan's own lie.'" - Thoburn.

As those who are primarily entrusted with the responsibility of training their children, Christian parents will come face to face with the issue of dating. With pregnancies, venereal diseases, AIDS, date rapes, and rampant sexual promiscuity on the rise among teens and even prevalent in Christian families, Christian schools, and Christian churches, isn't it about time we reevaluated the "institution" of dating? There is good news! As in all areas of life, God speaks with infinite wisdom through His Word about this critical issue... The underlying presupposition in giving our children what we call "a Christian education" is that as Christians we have a very distinct way of viewing all areas of life - distinct, that is, from unbelievers. We are to look at the world through God's eyes. We are to think God's thoughts, speak God's words, and perform God's deeds. And it is in the Bible where God's thoughts are made known. Therefore, there is nothing our children might be taught that can be taught in some "neutral" way as if that subject was not under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, or as if God had nothing at all to say about that subject. Jesus Christ is Lord of all -- Lord of all people, Lord of all creatures, Lord of all circumstances, and Lord of all knowledge (in Christ "are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" Col. 2:3, emphasis added). And dear ones, that is why God calls you to trust in the Lord with all your heart, and to "lean not unto thine own understanding" Prov. 3:5. In fact, we are to distrust our own understanding (cf. Prov. 3:7: "Do not be wise in thine own eyes"; Prov. 28:26: "He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool"; Is. 55:7-9: "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts", "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD."). Our understanding as finite and fallen creatures is not reliable about any subject, that is why we are not to acknowledge the Lord in some of our ways or even in most of our ways, but in all of our ways (Prov. 3:6). What does that have to do with teaching our children about love, dating, courtship, engagement, and marriage? Everything! If we are not giving our children God's thoughts in the area of dating and courtship, we have failed to give them a distinctly "Christian education" in that area of their lives. We have acted as though Jesus Christ was not Lord in their relationships with those of the opposite sex, and that there is in fact neutral ground in this subject for both Christians and non-christians." - Greg Price, Christian Education In The Home: Help! My Daughter Wants To Date, 1994.

ON FAMILY ISSUES
"Marriage is to be between one man and one woman... Marriage was ordained for the mutual help of husband and wife, for the increase of mankind with a legitimate issue, and of the Church with an holy seed; and for preventing of uncleanness... it is the duty of Christians to marry only in the Lord. And therefore such as profess the true reformed religion should not marry with infidels, papists, or other idolaters: neither should such as are godly be unequally yoked, by marrying with such as are notoriously wicked in their life, or maintain damnable heresies... Although the corruption of man be such as is apt to study arguments unduly to put asunder those whom God has joined together in marriage: yet, nothing but adultery, or such willful desertion as can no way be remedied by the Church, or civil magistrate, is cause sufficient of dissolving the bond of marriage." - The Westminster Confession of Faith, "Of Marriage and Divorce," excerpts from chapter 24, 1647 (Original Edition).

"And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." - Deuteronomy 6:7-8

The Family is a God-ordained institution, a spiritual and organic unity, that was established for the cultural mandate of 1) glorifying the Creator, and 2) subduing the earth. In this mandate (Genesis 2) the duties of the husband, wife, children, masters and servants are encompassed, and the Scriptures readily set forth a theology of domestical duties.Husbands, wives and children have specific, God-honoring duties to perform in their respective stations in the economy of God's redemptive plan. Their goal as a family is to 1) honor God2) edify the church and 3) promote Christian values in their respective stations of society. All this stems from the moral and spiritual values enumerated in the home and functioning to honor Christ Jesus. In this regard was the Puritan conception of the family or household. Dr. William Perkins described the family as a "little church"Dr. William Gouge called it the "seminary of the Church and commonwealth..." and Rev. Richard Baxter characterized the home as "a church... a society of Christians combined for the better worshipping and serving God." Rev. Lewis Bayly taught that "what the preacher is in the pulpit, the same the Christian householder is in his house." He was quoting Augustine. - The Christian Family by Dr. C. Matthew McMahon.

Twelve Signs of Today's Family Reformation (Chapter 26) from Family Reformation: The Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva

by Scott Brown

The book Family Reformation: The Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva by Scott Brown is available here and on Amazon.

The Fruits of Obedience Observed (Chapter 26)

1. Revival of Biblical Fatherhood. 2. Large Families. 3. Rejection of Feminism. 4. Modest Dress. 5. Early Manhood. 6. Persecution. 7. Generational Retention. 8. Books on Family Life. 9. Resurgence of Expository Preaching. 10. Clarification of the Gospel. 11. Doctrinal Awareness. 12. Family Integrated Church Movement.

There is, however, a family reformation movement afoot today. The same principle that transformed the family in Geneva is bringing about family reformation in our own time. This reformation, which is springing up among many whose hearts are being offered to the Lord, has at its heart a desire to obey Scripture in matters of family life. The following are a number of signs of this family reformation.

1. Revival of Biblical Fatherhood

Droves of fathers have turned their hearts toward home. The results can be seen in a renewed interest and emphasis on family worship, a recognition that the family is the center of discipleship, and an acknowledgment that the father is the primary provider of instruction. The home education movement, with its roots in the biblical doctrine of education and the proper role of fathers in discipleship, reflects this aspect of family renewal.

2. Large Families

High fertility rates are on the rise in the home education movement. This can be proven simply by counting the fifteen passenger vans at the homeschool conferences. In the church I attend, the average family size is 7 and the average number of children per woman is 5.2 while the national average is 2.05. This is reflective of a reformation of attitudes toward children. Homeschool families are having many children and thousands of men nationwide are having vasectomy reversals in order to obey Scripture on the issue fertility.

3. Rejection of Feminism

The traditional feminist career track is being challenged and overthrown as daughters in thousands of families in America are understanding and being reformed by the biblical vision of womanhood. They are staying home and promoting the prosperity of their families by helping their mothers raise children and making the home a place of industry and spiritual awakening.

4. Modest Dress

Women are developing a new awareness of the importance of biblical modesty and the implications of the gospel for their apparel. In the past decade, dozens of books have been released which deal with the subject using the words of Scripture as the main argument.

5. Early Manhood

I am observing a rising number of young men who have determined to reject frivolity, lust, and idleness, preferring the biblical pattern of discipleship and sobriety. Some are even becoming providers and fathers at an early age instead of spending the years of their youth with games and sports of little value in establishing a foundation for marriage and family.

6. Persecution

People have been rejected by their families and sometimes even from their churches for trying to be faithful to the Word of God. Many have suffered exclusion and censure simply because they rejected the current socially accepted patterns of family life.

7. Generational Retention

The loss of the next generation to Christianity seems to be slowed down in circles where family reformation is occurring. While the astonishing loss of 70-90% of the next generation continues in those established churches which prefer to continue the modern, unbiblical patterns of age segregation, the opposite statistic can be found in churches which seek to honor biblical patterns and to reform their families.

8. Books on Family Life

There is an outpouring of new books of family life that have their basis in Scripture. Instead of books that focus on psychology and the latest marketplace success techniques, there are a rising number of books being written where the authors are satisfied to focus exclusively on key biblical texts that explain family life.

9. Resurgence of Expository Preaching

As in Calvin's Geneva, there is a modern resurgence of the practice of "expository preaching." This practice, once it is embraced, stimulates conformity to biblical practices and values for family life.

10. Clarification of the Gospel

Genuine family reformation hinges on a right understanding of the gospel, for without it, the rising generation can easily be duped into believing they are Christians because of false views of works or repentance. There is a revival in the understanding of the gospel, with new organizations being created to promote the preaching of the true gospel.

11. Doctrinal Awareness

It has become quite well known that there is a revival of Calvinistic/ Reformed theology in twenty-first century America. A companion to this is a renewed awareness of the doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture. This awareness is awakening many people in the church to the fact that they have not been carefully applying the Word of God to every area of life - including family life.

12. Family Integrated Church Movement

Over the past decade, there has been significant upheaval in established churches over questions regarding age segregated church life, the methods and philosophy of modern youth ministry, and the distinctive roles of fathers and mothers in the church. This is coupled with a wave of church planting which features many of the above signs of awakening incorporated into everyday church life. This methodology of family integration rejects the age segregated and feministic church models of the last half century as modern inventions.

These twelve signs are markers of a spiritual awakening and they are occurring as a result of a desire to know and do the will of God. Each of the above elements represents a point of obedience to Scripture arising from a desire to be conformed to divine patterns and to obey the Word of the Lord in all matters of life -- including family life. (emphases added throughout, above).

The book Family Reformation: The Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva by Scott Brown is available here and on Amazon.

Review:  "Scott Brown has done us yeoman service in culling the vast corpus of John Calvin in order to amass hundreds of valuable quotations on what this colossal Reformer had to say on marriage and family. What a fascinating treasure-trove Family Reformation is, addressing scores of subjects that are as pertinent today as in Calvin's own day! As always, Calvin is scriptural, practical, thorough, succinct, powerful, and honest. This may well be one of the best and most helpful marriage and family books on the market today. Use it as your daily devotional, and give a copy to your friends. Every conscientious family will be enriched by Calvin's wise advice."
