Rome's Great Secret: Free Will
Free MP3s, Books and More!
"I will go as far as Martin Luther, in that strong assertion of his, where he says, 'If any man doth ascribe of salvation, even the very least, to the free will of man, he knoweth nothing of grace, and he hath not learnt Jesus Christ aright.' It may seem a harsh sentiment; but he who in his soul believes that man does of his own free will turn to God, cannot have been taught of God, for that is one of the first principles taught us when God begins with us, that we have neither will nor power, but that He gives both; that he is 'Alpha and Omega' in the salvation of men."
- Charles Spurgeon, Sermons, Vol. 1, p. 395, Free Will A Slave (1855), emphases added.
"So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy." - Romans 9:16

ROME'S GREAT SECRET: FREE WILL
by Dr. Reg Barrow
How things have changed! In 1563 the Council of Trent (an avowed standard of Popery) asserted: "If any one shall affirm, that man's free will, moved and excited by God, does not by consenting, co-operate with God, the mover and exciter, so as to prepare and dispose itself for the attainment of justification; if moreover, anyone shall say, that the human will cannot refuse complying, if it pleases; but that it is unactive, and merely passive, let such an one be ACCURSED! If anyone shall affirm, that since the fall of Adam, man's freewill is lost and extinguished; having title only, yea a name, without a thing, and a fiction introduced by Satan into the Church; let such an one be ACCURSED!" (cited from p. 139 of The Sovereignty of God by A.W. Pink)
More simply put, should anyone assert that man DOES NOT have a free will, let such an one be damned as a heretic! The seriousness and force of this statement, from the Vatican of that day, can easily be illustrated. For, for this cause, William Tyndale (as well as many others among the courageous reformers of the sixteenth century) were burned at the stake (cf. pp. 166-167, God's Outlaw: The Story of William Tyndale and the English Bible by Brian Edwards).
Martin Luther clearly saw the issue of free will as the primary cause of his separation from Rome. In his book, The Bondage of the Will, Luther replied to the Romanist Erasmus and his diatribe The Freedom of the Will. Though disagreeing with just about everything else Erasmus wrote, Luther commended Erasmus for at least recognizing the crux of the matter at issue between Rome and the Bible believers, the debate over "free will." In this regard Luther said, "that unlike all the rest, you alone have attacked the real issue, the essence of the matter in dispute," -- i.e. man's so-called "free-will."
As opposed to the Roman Catholic/Arminian view on free will, we find the Biblical doctrine summed up, on pages 52-53, of the Westminster Confession of Faith, (Ch. 9, sec. 3 and 4, 1647 edition reprinted by Free Presbyterian Publications) "Man by his fall into a state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation (Rom. 5:6, 8:7, Jn 15:5), so as a natural man, being altogether averse from that good (Rom. 3:10-22), and dead in sin (Eph. 2:1, Col. 2:13), is not able by his own strength, to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto (Jn 6:44, 65, Eph. 2:2-5, 14, Titus 3:13). When God converts a sinner, and translates him into the state of grace, he freeth him from his natural bondage under sin (Col. 1:13, Jn. 8:34-36) and by his grace alone enables him freely to will and to do that which is spiritually good (Phil. 2:13, Rom. 6:18, 22), yet so as that by reason of his remaining corruption, he doth not perfectly nor only will that which is good, but doth also will that which is evil (Gal. 5:17, Rom. 7:15-23).
Two opposing and irreconcilable views have been placed before you today and only one question remains, Who do you stand with? The Bible, Christ, His prophets, Reformers, martyrs, Puritans, etc., (against man's free will) or with the Roman Catholic (Papal Antichrist) and Arminian teachings and traditions of men (for fictional "free will")? (Jn. 10:3, 27, Matt. 15:7-14, 16:6-12).
For further study see Jn. 1:13 and Rom. 9:16. In John 15:16 you will notice: "many are called" (that is the outward call, through preaching, etc.) but few chose? oh no, the scripture reads: "few are chosen," that is, chosen of God's will, receiving the inward effectual call and enablement of the Holy Spirit (Psalm 110:3), as they are predestined to (Rom. 8:29-30).
In light of the short study above, it is easy to see how a lack of doctrinal and historical study is leading many into serious compromise with the false ecumenical apostasy espoused by Rome and other deviant beliefs. In this area, many "Protestants," even now, bow down to Rome's humanistic, anti-Christian, idol of free will (including Norman Geisler, Dave Hunt, William Lane Craig and a host of others). May God grant the "free-willers" repentance (2 Tim. 2:24-26) and give you the strength to remain faithful to His word!
"Let all the 'free-will' in the world do all it can with all its strength; it will never give rise to a single instance of ability to avoid being hardened if God does not give the Spirit, or of meriting mercy if it is left to its own strength." - Martin Luther, The Bondage of the Will, p. 202
"The Papists... hold that man, through his own free will, returns to God; and on this point is our greatest contest with them at this day." - John Calvin, Commentary on Jeremiah (Jeremiah 31:19)
"Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." - John 1:13
"Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father." - John 6:65

"There is no such a thing as preaching Christ and him crucified unless you preach what is now-a-days called Calvinism. I have my own ideas, and those I state boldly. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else."
- Charles Spurgeon, The New Park Street Pulpit, Vol. 1 (1856), emphases added

"This book is most needful at the present day. The teachings of many so-called Protestants are more in accordance with the Dogmas of the Papists, or the ideas of Erasmus, than with the Principles of the Reformers; they are more in harmony with the Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent than with any Protestant or Reformed Confessions of Faith. If the Lord should be pleased to open the eyes and understanding of some of these so-called Protestants to whom I have referred-through the perusal of this work of the great Reformer -- Luther -- enabling them to see that they are at present believing and teaching awful delusions contrary to the Word of God, and the Protestant Reformed Religion, and causing them to return to The Old Paths, the labours of "THE SOVEREIGN GRACE UNION" will not have been in vain. " - Henry Atherton's Preface to Martin Luther's The Bondage of the WillThe Bondage of the Will #1 by Martin Luther (Luther's Most Important Book) by Martin Luther (Free MP3)
Luther recognized this book as his most important work and even said that if all his other books perished, he would hope that this one, along with his Small Catechism, would be the only ones to remain. This is one of the most important books of the early Reformation, for it deals with what Luther saw to be the heart of the Gospel. Luther here refutes the Romish notion of 'free will' in man and upholds the absolute sovereignty of God in the salvation of sinners -- as well as justification by faith alone. Luther clearly saw the issue of free will as the primary cause of his separation from Rome. In this book he replied to the Roman Catholic scholar, Erasmus, and his diatribe The Freedom of the Will. Though disagreeing with just about everything else Erasmus wrote, Luther commended Erasmus for recognizing the crux of the matter at issue between Rome and the Bible believers, the debate over 'free will.' In this regard Luther wrote, "that unlike all the rest, you alone have attacked the real issue, the essence of the matter in dispute (i.e. man's so-called 'free-will' - ed.)... You and you alone saw, what was the grand hinge upon which the whole turned, and therefore you attacked the vital part at once; for which, from my heart, I thank you."

The Bondage and Liberation of the Will, The: A Defence of the Orthodox Doctrine of Human Choice against Pighius (Texts and Studies in Reformation and Post-Reformation Thought) by John Calvin (Paperback and Kindle)
This volume provides Calvin's fullest treatment of the relationship between the grace of God and the free will of humans. It offers insight into Calvin's interpretations of the church fathers, especially Augustine, on the topics of grace and free will and contains Calvin's answer to Pighius's objection that preaching is unnecessary if salvation is by grace alone. This important work, edited by renowned scholar A.N.S. Lane, contains material not found elsewhere in Calvin's writings and will be required reading for students of Calvin and the Protestant Reformation.

Arminianism Agrees With Roman Catholicism And Calvinism Agrees With The Bible by Richard Bennett (Free MP3)
The section on Calvinism and Arminianism, in this testimony from a former Roman Catholic priest, who is now a Calvinist, is very telling - demonstrating how Arminianism was a stumbling block to his salvation, because of the Arminianism heresy's close affinity with Roman Catholic heresy (both systems of thought, Arminianism and Romanism, teaching, as they do, what is completely contrary to Scripture regarding man's will).

Do God's Commands Imply the Ability to Obey? Quotes from Martin Luther
"Luther's Bondage of the Will is one of the most important books ever written. It is also a delightful read. l I found myself underlining choice quotes on almost every other page. I hope you find the following quotes to be as beneficial as I did. For context, Luther, is responding to some of Erasmus' assertions in support of man's natural moral ability to obey the gospel. Erasmus presupposed that all of God's commands to obey proved that we had the "free-will" or moral ability to do so. Erasmus would often ask, "if we can do nothing, what is the purpose of all the laws, precepts, threats and promises in the Bible? All these precepts are useless if nothing is attributed to the human will. If it is not in the power of every man to keep what is commanded, all the exhortations of Scripture are of necessity useless," Erasmus would say. Luther responded by saying Paul gives the answer: 'by the law is the knowledge of sin'. With great wit and irony exposes why free will is an erroneous, unscriptural doctrine which, ultimately, undermines the gospel itself. Erasmus would continue to show Luther the commands of Scripture in an attempt to prove man had the native ability to believe the gospel on his own. But as Dr. Luther said to Erasmus, "when you are finished with all your commands and exhortations ... I'll write Romans.3:20 over the top of it all" ("...through the law comes knowledge of sin."). In other words, the commands exist to show, not our moral ability, but our inability. This includes God's command of all men everywhere to repent and believe the gospel, an impossible act of will apart from a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit uniting us to Christ... so that in so far as the will is good at all, it is so from God, not from ourselves." - Monergism.com

"The system of doctrine known as Arminianism is heresy
. It is an offshoot from Pelagianism and Semi-Pelagianism. It has been adversely affecting the church and its doctrine for over 250 years. Men like Finney and Wesley, being the charismatic personalities they were, propagated the doctrine and resurrected the Pelagian error from the pit of hell once again to persecute the church of Christ
. Today's Arminians are not necessarily the same caliber as those of old. Historic Arminianism is altogether heretical
. However, contemporary Arminianism is often confusing; it melds together a number of different theological ideas to come up with a theological 'soup'." - Dr. C. Matthew McMahon

"During the Arminian regime of Archbishop Laud, the persecutor of the Puritans and the Covenanters, zealous Arminians were promoted to the best bishoprics. A famous letter written by a Jesuit to the Rector of Brussels and endorsed by Laud himself was found in his study at Lambeth. A copy of this letter was found among the papers of a society of priests and Jesuits at Clerkenwell in 1627. The following is an extract: 'Now we have planted the Sovereign Drug Arminianism which we hope will purge the Protestants from their heresy; and it flourisheth and beareth fruit in due season. I am at this time transported with joy to see how happily all instruments and means, as well as great or smaller, cooperate with our purposes. But to return to the main fabric: OUR FOUNDATION IS ARMINIANISM.' (S.G.U. Publication No. 173, p. 142)."
"By those who dislike controversy, it is often alleged that Arminianism and Calvinism only differ in respect of the fact that while the former chiefly stresses man's responsibility, the latter lays all the weight upon Divine Sovereignty. This is not a correct presentation of the facts. The Arminian does indeed stress man's responsibility to the exclusion of the sovereignty of God, and this is a fruitful cause of more than one error. The man, on the other hand, who stresses the sovereignty of God to the exclusion of man's responsibility is a hyper-Calvinist and is in error on this aspect of truth just as surely as the Arminian. The true Calvinist lays stress on both doctrines as they are unfolded in the inspired and infallible Word of God. ... Arminianism appears as the gospel of Christ, but in reality is 'another gospel.' It is a heresy, deadly and soul-ruining, and all the more so because subtle, plausible, and popular. "It is a scheme," in the words of Dr. Cunningham, the renowned theologian, "for dividing or partitioning the salvation of sinners between God and sinners themselves, instead of ascribing it as the Bible does, to the sovereign grace of God, the perfect and all-sufficient work of Christ, and the efficacious and omnipotent operation of the Holy Spirit."

QUOTES REFUTING THE ARMINIAN HERESY (FREE WILL) & DEFENDING THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD
From Facets of Grace
Spurgeon: "Free will has carried many souls to hell but never a soul to heaven."
- Arminianism: Another Gospel
I have my own private opinion that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and Him crucified, unless we preach what nowadays is called Calvinism. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else.
I do not believe we can preach the gospel, if we do not preach justification by faith, without works; nor unless we preach the sovereignty of God in His dispensation of grace; nor unless we exalt the electing, unchangeable, eternal, immutable, conquering love of Jehovah; nor do I think we can preach the gospel, unless we base it upon the special and particular redemption of His elect and chosen people which Christ wrought out upon the cross; nor can I comprehend a gospel which lets saints fall away after they are called, and suffers the children of God to be burned in the fires of damnation after having once believed in Jesus. Such a gospel I abhor.
- Charles Spurgeon, A Defense of Calvinism
"What the Arminian wants to do is to arouse man's activity: what we want to do is to kill it once for all -- to show him that he is lost and ruined, and that his activities are not now at all equal to the work of conversion; that he must look upward. They seek to make the man stand up: we seek to bring him down, and make him feel that there he lies in the hand of God, and that his business is to submit himself to God, and cry aloud, 'Lord, save, or we perish.' We hold that man is never so near grace as when he begins to feel he can do nothing at all. When he says, 'I can pray, I can believe, I can do this, and I can do the other,' marks of self-sufficiency and arrogance are on his brow."
- Charles Spurgeon
: Q. 74. What is the direct antidote to Methodism, the doctrine of heart-holiness?
A. Calvinism: All the devices of Satan, for these fifty years, have done far less toward stopping this work of God, than that single doctrine
. Be diligent to guard these tender minds against the predestinarian poison.
- The Works of John Wesley
(Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, MI) (1996) Volume 8, p. 336.
"My brethren, discard for ever with detestation and abhorrence any doctrine which would lead you to think that any work, or grace, anything just, pure, lovely, or of good report, in man, is of man himself. Depend upon it, though it come to you in the garb of earnestness, and paint its cheeks, and look fair enough to you, it is the harlot of Popery in another dress. Only let such doctrine be pushed to its fair conclusion, and you come at once to salvation by works. Ever stand by the good old Calvinistic banner, the banner which Augustine waved of old, and which Paul handed down to us direct from our master Jesus; and hold, believe, and affirm, never swerving from it, that all things in the new creation are of God."
- C.H. Spurgeon (from the sermon "High Doctrine," delivered on Sabbath morning, June 3rd, 1860 -- and free as an audio MP3 at http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=62406204549 or as free text at http://www.spurgeon.org/sermons/0318.htm).
"In reference to the Calvinistic doctrines -- the doctrines of free and sovereign grace held by the Reformers in England, Toplady observes, "Queen Mary and her Spanish husband well knew that Calvinism is the very life and soul of the Reformation; and that Popery would never flourish till the Calvinistic doctrines were eradicated." Her efforts to destroy by sword and fire those who upheld the Truth earned for her the unenviable appellation of 'Bloody Mary.' The charge on which many of them were burnt at the stake was that they held to the doctrine of predestination and rejected the Arminian and Popish doctrine of free-will."
- Arminianism: Another Gospel
ARMINIANISM: THE SPAWN OF POPERY, THE LAST AND GREATEST MONSTER OF THE MAN OF SIN, THE MYSTERY OF THE MYSTERY OF INIQUITY, THE VERY QUINTESSENCE OF EQUIVOCATION, THE POPE'S CABINET, THE VERY ESSENCE OF POPERY. Arminianism appears as the gospel of Christ, but in reality is 'another gospel.' It is a heresy, deadly and soul ruining, and all the more so because subtle, plausible, and popular.
"It is a scheme," in the words of Dr. Cunningham, the renowned theologian, "for dividing or partitioning the salvation of sinners between God and sinners themselves, instead of ascribing it as the Bible does, to the sovereign grace of God, the perfect and all-sufficient work of Christ, and the efficacious and omnipotent operation of the Holy Spirit." Arminianism is the very essence of Popery.
Christopher Ness of St. John's College, Cambridge, a Puritan divine, in his treatise "An Antidote Against Arminianism
," recommended by the great Dr. John Owen
"As blessed Athanasius sighed out in his day, 'The world is overrun with Arianism; so it is the sad sigh of our present times, the Christian world is overrun, yea, overwhelmed with the flood of Arminianism; which cometh as it were, out of the mouth of the serpent, that he might cause the woman (the Church) to be carried away of the flood thereof
.' [Rev. 12.15.]"
He quotes Mr. Rous, Master of Eton College, as saying, 'Arminianism is the spawn of Popery, which the warmth of favour may easily turn into frogs of the bottomless pit
,' and Dr. Alexander Leighton who calls Arminianism 'the Pope's Benjamin, the last and greatest monster of the man of sin: the elixir of Anti-Christianism; the mystery of the mystery of iniquity; the Pope's cabinet; the very quintessence of equivocation
- Arminianism: Another Gospel - Wesley, Moody, Billy Graham, Refuted, With Quotes By Calvin, Spurgeon, Edwards, Owen, Rutherford, Hodge, et al.
Toplady: "The charge on which many of the Protestant martyrs were burnt at the stake was that they held to the doctrine of predestination & rejected the Arminian and Popish doctrine of free-will."
"It is often alleged that Arminianism and Calvinism only differ in that the former chiefly stresses man's responsibility and the latter lays all the weight upon Divine Sovereignty. This is not correct.
The Arminian does stress man's responsibility to the exclusion of the sovereignty of God, and this is a fruitful cause of more than one error. The man, on the other hand, who stresses the sovereignty of God to the exclusion of man's responsibility is a hyper-Calvinist nd is in error on this aspect of truth just as surely as the Arminian. The true Calvinist lays stress on both doctrines as they are unfolded in the inspired and infallible Word of God
- Foreword to Arminianism Another Gospel
In reference to the Calvinistic doctrines -- the doctrines of free and sovereign grace held by the Reformers in England, Toplady observes, ...
In the following century the Caroline period (the reign of the Stuart kings including Charles I and Charles II) Arminianism grew to be the prevalent faith of the Church of England, according to Dr. G. P. Fisher in his 'History of the Christian Church' (p. 430).
In Scotland, too, Arminianism was making serious inroads. The saintly Samuel Rutherford who occupied a professor's chair at St. Andrew's University, made use of his scholarship to defend the faith by publishing a notable book against Arminianism. "It was this malicious 'spirit of Arminianism'," writes the editor of 'The Contender' (Nova Scotia) "that drove the episcopal leaders (in conjunction with the civil power of the king) to persecute the Covenanters to prison and to death."
As a direct result of his book against Arminianism, Rutherford was put through the form of a 'Trial' by a group of Arminian bishops who were led by Sydserff of Galloway, deprived of his pastoral charge at Anwoth and banished to the town of Aberdeen.
In a letter Rutherford wrote to a minister in Ireland, Robert Cunningham, he says: "The cause that ripened their hatred was my book against the Arminians, whereof they accused me, on those three days I appeared before them,"and in a letter from Aberdeen in 1637 to Mr. John Ferguson of Ochiltree, Rutherford refers to his trial, saying, "I was judicially accused for my book against the Arminians, and commanded by the Chancellor to acknowledge I had done a fault in writing against Dr. Jackson, a wicked Arminian."
In a footnote to this letter, the editor Dr. Bonar, says:
Dr. Thomas Jackson, Dean of Peterborough, first held Calvinistic sentiments but afterwards became an Arminian, a change which recommended him to the favour and patronage of Archbishop Laud.
The character of Laud may be seen in relation to his part in the trial, sentencing, imprisonment, and torturing of Dr. Alexander Leighton at London
. (Dr. Leighton's views on Arminianism are quoted above). A sketch of Leighton's history is given in the preface to a letter which Rutherford wrote him while in prison. The sketch says that Leighton, because of his "zeal for Presbyterian principles and against the innovations of Laud," was arrested in 1629 and kept in an abominable cell sixteen weeks before his trial by the Star Chamber
. Because of this "severe distress that had brought skin and hair almost wholly off his body
," he could not attend his trial. The Star Chamber "condemned the afflicted and aged divine to be degraded as a minister, to have one of his ears cut off, and one side of his nose slit, to be branded on the face with a red-hot iron, to stand in the pillory, to be whipped at a post, to pay a fine of £1,000 and to suffer imprisonment until the fine was paid. When this inhuman sentence was pronounced, Laud took off his hat, and holding up his hands, gave thanks to God who had given the Church victory over her enemies! The sentence was executed without mercy, and Leighton lay in prison till upwards of ten years
. When liberated he could hardly walk, see, or hear. He died in 1649.
In 1631, five years before he was condemned and banished to Aberdeen, Rutherford wrote to Marion McNaught from his parish at Anwoth concerning Dr. Henry Burton, whose footsteps he was later to follow. Says Rutherford in this letter, 'Know that I am in great heaviness for the pitiful case of our Lord's Kirk. I hear the cause why Dr. Burton is committed to prison is his writing and preaching against Arminians
. I therefore entreat the aid of your prayers for myself, and the Lord's captives of hope, and for Zion. The Lord hath let and daily lets me see how deep furrows Arminianism and the followers of it draw upon the back of God's Israel
-- but our Lord cut the cords of the wicked! Arminianism was not more rampant than it is now in England, Scotland, and our own North American continent. Let us not think that the malignant spirit of persecution that moved the Arminians -- led by Bishop Sydserff, Archbishop Laud, and others -- died at the end of the Covenanting struggles of long ago
. The Arminians of today hold precisely the same false doctrines, and are just as relentlessly opposed to the absolute sovereignty of God and unconditional election as were the Arminians of old
. (The Contender -- Nova Scotia, April, 1955.)
- ARMINIANISM: ANOTHER GOSPEL
Not less explicit was Luther on the fundamental doctrine of the divine decrees; which, with other Arminian dogmas of creature merit, had been almost universally propagated and stamped with the pretended infallible authority of Rome.
- David Steele, Notes on the Apocalypse
(1870), pp. 211-213.
"I will venture to assert that not one grain of Arminianism ever attended a saint [with him] into heaven
... They may be compared to Paul, when he went from Jerusalem to Damascus, and the grace of God struck him down: he fell a free-willer; but he rose a free-gracer
- Augustus Montague Toplady
"Our next task is to take a view of the idol himself, of this great deity of free-will, whose original being not well known, he is pretended, like the Ephesian image of Diana, to have fallen down from heaven, and to have his endowments from above. But yet, considering what a nothing he was at his first discovery in comparison of the vast giant-like hugeness to which now he is grown, we may say of him as the painter said of his monstrous picture, which he had mended or rather marred according to every one's fancy, "Hunc populus fecit," it is the issue of the people's brain."
- John Owen, A Display of Arminianism: Being a Discovery of the Old Pelagian Idol Free Will, With the New Goddess Contingency, Advancing Themselves into the Throne of the God of Heaven, to the Prejudice of His Grace, Providence, and Supreme Dominion Over the Children of Men; Wherein the Main Errors by Which They Are Fallen Off From the Received Doctrine of All the Reformed Churches, With Their Opposition in Divers Particulars to the Doctrine Established in the Church of England, are Discovered and Laid Open Out of Their Own Writings and Confessions, and Confuted by the Word of God
(Canada: Still Waters Revival Books, 1989), p. 114.
Below is a short quote from a blog showing why Finney was actually an enemy of genuine biblical revival,
"Predictably, most of Finney's spiritual heirs lapsed into apostasy, Socinianism, mere moralism, cultlike perfectionism, and other related errors. In short, Finney's chief legacy was confusion and doctrinal compromise. Evangelical Christianity virtually disappeared from western New York in Finney's own lifetime. Despite Finney's accounts of glorious "revivals," most of the vast region of New England where he held his revival campaigns fell into a permanent spiritual coldness during Finney's lifetime and more than a hundred years later still has not emerged from that malaise. This is directly owing to the influence of Finney and others who were simultaneously promoting similar ideas.
The Western half of New York became known as "the burnt-over district," because of the negative effects of the revivalist movement that culminated in Finney's work there.
These facts are often obscured in the popular lore about Finney. But even Finney himself spoke of "a burnt district" [Memoirs, 78], and he lamented the absence of any lasting fruit from his evangelistic efforts."
Arminianism 'came from Rome, and leads thither again'... let us add the testimony of a professed Jesuit,... 'We have planted that soveraigne drugge Arminianisme,... But, to return unto the maine fabricke: OUR FOUNDATION IS ARMINIANISME'...The 'Sovereign drug, Arminianism,' which said the Jesuit, 'we (i.e. we Papists) have planted' in England, did indeed bid fair 'to purge our Protestant Church effectually. How merrily Popery and Arminianism, at that time, danced hand in hand,'... If we sum up the evidence that has been given, we shall find its amount to be, that Arminianism came from the Church of Rome, and leads back again to the pit whence it was digged.
- Augustus Toplady, Arminianism: The Road to Rome!
Was Charles Finney Arminian or Pelagian? By Jerry Johnson
Many Evangelical's mistakenly believe that Charles Finney was an Arminian and therefore, our debate with him is the age old Calvinism versus Arminian debate! Dr. Michael Brown, host of In The Line of Fire being one of them. Perhaps the reason why so many mistakenly label Finney as an Arminian is because they have not taken the time to read Finney in his own words.
So was Finney an Evangelical? If he was, then our debate with him would be an in-house debate -- one between Christians. But can a person deny original sin, the effects of the fall on the mind, will and emotions of man, double imputation (meaning our sins were imputed to Christ and His righteousness imputed to us), and deny substitutionary atonement and still be considered orthodox?
This new documentary by NiceneCouncil.com
documents that Finney was not only unorthodox and rejected evangelical theology, but that he taught that salvation was only obtainable through complete and uninterrupted obedience to the moral law
. And though we believe the law of God is important in the life of the believer; it cannot and was never intended to save. Only Christ alone saves
- Jerry Johnson, Was Charles Finney Armininian or Pelagian?
Warnings from the pulpit and denunciation of the errors of Arminianism are not now heard as once they were. Even in pulpits where the truth is preached, it is to be feared that, in some cases, a faithful witness is not raised against Arminianism.
The cause of this may be due in a measure to the fact that in defending the cause of truth new forms of error have to be exposed and assailed, with the result that the old enemy is left so far unmolested as if it were dead.
Unfortunately this is not so; Arminianism is very much alive in the pulpit, in the theological and religious press, and in the modem evangelistic meeting... When we bear in mind the horror with which our forefathers regarded Arminianism, the modern attitude to it indicates how far the professing Church has drifted from the position of the theologians of those days
. (The Reformed Faith by the Rev. D. Beaton, p. 18).Arminianism was the false gospel of John Wesley and his followers in the eighteenth century, and of D.L. Moody in the nineteenth
. It is the stock-in-trade of well nigh all the popular evangelists of this century from Billy Graham downwards. The gospel halls of the Brethren, Open and Closed, are nurseries of Arminianism. The active agents of the Faith Mission and the Salvation Army, notwithstanding the moral and social results to the credit of the latter, spread the plague on every side
. All the sects which have sprung up in these latter times, however divergent in their doctrines and practices -- Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Pentecostalists, Mormons, Christadelphians, Cooneyites, etc., etc., have all in common, the fatal lie of free-willism. It is Satan's sovereign drug, which causes the soul to sleep in delusion, and the end of such delusion is death. "Free will," says Spurgeon, "has carried many souls to hell but never a soul to heaven."Arminianism is armed to the teeth in enmity to true and vital godliness. Where it flourishes its fruits are a superficial goody-goody form of godliness -- the lamp and the light of the foolish virgins which went out in death and in despair.
The Declaratory Acts of 1879, 1892 and 1921 in Scotland, and in 1901 in the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand threw open the flood-gates to the deluge of Arminianism. Spiritual death and desolation followed. The fat land was turned into barrenness, and the Churches adopting these Declaratory Acts are now well on the road to Rome. The 'sovereign drug' of Arminianism has flourished beyond the wildest dreams of priests and Jesuits.
It is not by open and unabashed passing of nefarious Declaratory Acts that Satan as an angel of light now works. Subtle infiltration is his present policy and technique
. What need there is for the 'denunciation' and the 'horror' the Rev. D. Beaton refers to, as the cloven-hoof of Arminianism is unmistakably seen far within the tents of the popular evangelical conventions, fellowships, and unions of our day!
The Scripture Union, the Inter-Varsity Fellowship, the International Council of Christian Churches, the conventions of the Keswick fraternity etc., are all riddled with the cancer of Arminianism
