The Works of Ebenezer Erskine, volume one, contains:

  • I. - God's little remnant keeping their garments clean in an evil day. Thou hast a few names in Sardis, which have not defiled their garments; and tbey shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy.- Rev. iii. 4.
  • II. - The backslider characterized: or, the evil and danger of defection described. Heb. x. 38.--If any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
  • III. - The wind of the Holy Ghost blowing upon the dry bones m the valley of vision. Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. - Ezek. xxxvii. 9.
  • IV. - The King is held in the galleries. The King is held in the galleries. - Song of Sol. vii- 5.
  • V. - The groans of believers under their burdens. Psal. Xxxviii. 9.--Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. Rom. Viii. 26.--The Spirit helpeth our infirmities and maketh intercession for us, with groanings which cannot be uttered. We that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened. - 2 Cor. v. 4.
  • VI. - The believer exalted in imputed righteousness. Isa. Xlv. 24, 25.--Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength, even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.
  • VII. - The humble soul the peculiar favourite of heaven. Job xxii. 29.--When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up, and he shall save the humble person. 1 Pet. V. 5,6.--Be clothed with humility, for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. - Psal. cxxxviii. 6.
  • VIII. - The necessity and profitableness of good works asserted. 2 Cor. vii. 1.--Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Rev. xxii. 14.--Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. John vii. 17.--If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
  • IX. Christ in the believer's arms. Psal. lxxiii. 25. Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides thee. Luke ii. 28.--Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God.
  • X. - A discourse on the throne of grace. Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne - Psal. Ixxxix. 14.
  • XI. - The assurance of faith, opened and applied. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which he hath consecrated for us through the vail, that is to say his flesh; and having an high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith. - Heb. x. 19, 22.
  • XII.- God in Christ, a God of love. God is love. - 1 John iv. 16.
  • XIII. - Unbelief arraigned and condemned at the bar of God. John xvi. 8, 9.--And when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment of sin; because they believe not on me. He that believeth not, is condemned already. - John iii. 18.
  • XIV. - The day-spring from on high. Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us. - Luke i. 78.
  • XV. - The rainbow of the covenant surrounding the throne of grace. And there was a rainbow round about the throne in sight like unto an emerald. - Rev. iv. 3.
  • XVI. - The tree of life shaking his fruits and leaves among the nations. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month, and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. - Rev. xxii. 2.
  • XVII. - The law of faith issuing forth from mount Zion. For the law shall go out of Zion. - Isa. ii. 3.
  • XVIII.- The stone rejected by the builders exalted as tbe head-stone of the corner. The stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head-stone of the corner. - Psal. cxviii. 22.

The Works of Ebenezer Erskine, volume two, contains:

  • I. The government upon Christ's shoulder. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of peace. - Isa. ix. 6.
  • II. - A treasure of gospel-grace digged out of Mount Sinai; or, the sinner's claim of right cleared from God's covenant with Israel at Sinai. I am the Lord thy God.- Thou shalt have no other gods before me. - Exod. xx. 2, 3. - - 25
  • III. - The standard of Heaven lifted up against the powers of hell, and their auxiliaries. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. - Isa. lix. 19.
  • IV.- The believer's journey from the wilderness of this world to the heavenly Canaan. Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her Beloved.- Song viii. 5.
  • V. - The true substance and strength of a church and nation. So the holy seed shall be the substance thereof, - Isa. vi. 3.
  • VI.- The first promise accomplished; or, the head of the Serpent bruised by the seed of the woman. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. -1 John iii. 8.
  • VII.- Courageous faith. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.- Psal. xxiii. 4.
  • VIII. - The solemnity of Christ's ascension to the throne of glory. God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. - Psal. xlvii. 5.
  • IX. - The wrath of man bounded by the power of God. Surely, the wrath of man shall praise thee; the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. - Psal. Ixxvi. 10.
  • X. - The name of God glorified in Christ. My name is in him. - Exod xxiii. 21.
  • XI. - The tabernacle of David ruined by man, and reared up by the mighty God. Ver. 8.--Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not destroy the house of Jacob, saith the Lord. Ver. 9.--For lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel, among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sive, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth. Ver. 10.--All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, the evil shall not overtake, nor prevent us. In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof, and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old. - Amos ix. 11.
  • XII. - The annals of redeeming love, with the Redeemer's vengeance upon the grand enemy of the redeemed. For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. - Isa. Ixiii. 4.
  • XIII.- The sovereignty of Zion's King. Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion. - Psal. ii. 6. XIV. - Christ the resurrection, and the life. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life. - John xi. 25.

The Works of Ebenezer Erskine, volume three, contains:

  • I. A Lamp ordained for God's Anointed. Psa. cxxxii. 17. - I have ordained a lamp for mine Anointed.
  • II. The Angel's seal set upon God's faithful servants, when hurtful winds are blowing in the church militant. Rev. vii. 1. 2. 3.-- And, after these things, I saw four Angels, standing on the four corners of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. And I saw another Angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God; and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, saying, hurt not the earth, nor the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
  • III. Christ considered as the nail fastened in a sure place, bearing all the glory of his father's house. Psa. Xx. 5.--In the name of our God, we will set up our banners. Is. xxii. 24 - And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his Father's house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity: from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons.
  • IV. A Robbery committed, and Restitution made both to God and man. Psa. Ixix. 4 Then I restored that which I took not away.
  • V. Worthless man much regarded by the mighty God. Psa. cxliv. 3 - Lord, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him? or the son of man, that thou makest account of him?
  • VI. The human nature preferred unto the angelical. Heb. ii. 15. - For -verify he took not on him the nature of angels? but, be took on him the seed of Abraham.
  • VII. The broken law magnified and made honourable. Is. xliii. 21. - The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.
  • VIII. The wise Virgins going forth to meet the Bridegroom. Matt. xxv. 6 - And at mid-night there was a cry made, behold, the Bridegroom cometh: go ye forth to meet him.
  • IX. The New Testament Ark opened against the deluge of divine wrath. Heb. xi. 7. - By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house.
  • X. The plant of renown. Ezek. xxxiv. 29 - And I will raise up for them a plant of renown.
  • XI. God's doves flying to his windows. Is. lx. 8.-- Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as doves to their windows.
  • XII. Christ set up from everlasting. Prov. viii. 23 - I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
  • XIII. Abraham rejoicing to see Christ's day afar off. John viii. 56.--Your father, Abraham, rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it and was glad.
  • XIV. Christ, as the breaker, opening all passes to glory that were impassible. Micah ii. 13. - The breaker is come up before them; they have broken up, and have passed througb the gate, and are gone out by it; and their king shall pass before them, and the Lord (or Jehovah) on the head of them.
  • XV. Ethiopia stretching out her hands to God. Psal. Ixviii. 31 - Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.
  • XVI. The kingdom of God within the soul of man. Luke xvii. 21. - For behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
  • XVII. Gospel treasure in earthen vessels. 2 Cor. iv. 7 - But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
  • XVIII. The character of a faithful minister of Christ. Col. i. 7 Epaphras, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ.
  • XIX. Christ in the clouds, coming to judgment. Matt. xvi. 37. - Then shall he reward every man according to his works.
  • XX. The word of salvation. Acts xii 16. - To you is the word of salvation sent.
