Calvinist Must Listen! How Christmas Keeping Denies The Gospel & the Work Of the Lord Jesus Christ

Jack Windisch on the Puritan Hard Drive

Calvinist Must Listen! How Christmas Keeping Denies The Gospel & the Work Of the Lord Jesus Christ, By Pastor Jim Dodson (Free MP3)

"It is commonly objected, that we may as well keep a day for the nativity, as for the resurrection of Christ. We have answered already, that Christ's Day, or the Lord's Day, is the day appointed for remembrance of his nativity, and all his actions and benefits, as well as for the resurrection." - David Calderwood (Covenanter), emphases added

A Puritan Reformed Discussion of Holy Days (Lord's Day/Christian Sabbath, Christmas, Easter, etc.), by Covenanter Scholar Greg Barrow (Free MP3)

"When the Puritans came to power in England, attention was repeatedly given to Christmas. In 1644, December 25 fell upon a day previously scheduled for a monthly fast. The Parliament debated the issue and resolved to observe the day with fasting and prayer, especially due to the present circumstances of the nation. In June 1647, Parliament passed legislation abolishing Christmas and other holidays: 'Forasmuch as the feast of the nativity of Christ, Easter, Whitsuntide, and other festivals, commonly called holy-days, have been heretofore superstitiously used and observed; be it ordained, that the said feasts, and all other festivals, commonly called holy-days, be no longer observed as festivals; any law, statute, custom, constitution, or canon, to the contrary in anywise not withstanding.'" -  Kevin Reed, Christmas: An Historical Survey Regarding Its Origins and Opposition to It (Free Online Book), emphases added

Presbyterians Do Not Observe Christmas, Easter, etc. (A Reformation Argument Against Popish Holy Days), by Samuel Miller (Free MP3)

"The real meaning of Christmas is compromise - a sinful fusion between the worship of the true God and the worship of the pagan world that was instituted by a church which was not prepared to cast down the idols of the nations and burn the Asherah poles - or Yule logs - and enforce the pure worship of the God of the Bible. We must not join with them. We must not follow in the ways of Jeroboam, son of Nebat. We must not be yoked together with unbelievers. Let us reclaim instead the glory and delight of the Lord's Holy Day and learn to call the Sabbath a delight. Let us rejoice together in the precious sacrament which Jesus has given to His Church as a celebration of His life, death, and resurrection. And in doing these things we are promised a blessing from God: Therefore, come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing and I will receive you and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." - Doug Comin, What Fellowship Hath Christ and Belial? An examination of the religious celebration of Christmas in light of the Scriptural duty of separation and the Regulative Principle of worship.

Christmas Is A Roman Catholic Missions Strategy

For let your honours be assuredly persuaded, that where idolatry is maintained or permitted (where it may be suppressed), that there shall God's wrath reign, not only upon the blind and obstinate idolater, but also upon the negligent sufferers [of the same]; especially if God has armed their hands with power to suppress such abomination. By idolatry, we understand the Mass, invocation of saints, adoration of images, and the keeping and retaining of the same; and, finally, all honouring of God not contained in his holy word. ... By the contrary doctrine we understand whatsoever men by laws, councils, or constitutions, have imposed upon the consciences of men, without the expressed commandment of God’s word, such as be the vows to chastity, forswearing of marriage, binding of men and women to several and disguised apparels, to the superstitious observation of fasting days, difference of meat for conscience sake, prayer for the dead, and keeping of holy days of certain Saints commanded by man, such as be all those that the Papists have invented, as the feasts (as they term them) of the Apostles, Martyrs, Virgins, of Christmas, Circumcision, Epiphany, Purification, and other fond feasts of our Lady: which things because in God’s Scriptures they neither have commandment nor assurance, we judge them utterly to be abolished from this Realm: affirming farther that the obstinate maintainers and teachers of such abominations ought not to escape the punishment of the civil Magistrate. - The First Book of Discipline (1560)on the Puritan Hard Drive

Days, Months, Seasons and Years, by Brian Schwertley (Free MP3)

This sermons sets forth the classic Puritan, Presbyterian and Reformation view of holy days against human inventions in the worship of God, including the liturgical calendar. This message also looks at and refutes some modern arguments by wayward Christians who try to justify what the Devil loves and Scripture condemns regarding holy days. It also upholds, based on the second and fourth commandments (or what is sometimes called the "Scriptural Law of Worship" or the "Regulative Principle of Worship"), the Lord's Day or Christian Sabbath. This MP3 also deals with the "adiaphora" or "things indifferent" argument and demonstrates who is really legalistic when the issue of holy days is debated.

Jim Dodson Reviews and Recommends the Puritan Hard Drive

If you love the Bible, then you may well be Reformed. If you think of yourself as Reformed, but you have seldom or have never read older Reformed literature, prepare to be challenged. The Puritan Hard Drive provides primary sources and depth of theological and spiritual insight which is lacking in much of what is passed off as genuine Reformed theology. If you think of yourself as conservative, the older Puritan and Reformed authors will help you sort reality from myth in your quest to be truly Reformed. There are more solid resources for less money here than anywhere else. I highly recommend you take responsibility for your soul and spend a few shekels for this cup of cold water in the midst of the modern religious desert.
