Dr. Joel Beeke on the Puritan Hard Drive

"John Calvin was by far the greatest of the Reformers with respect to the talents he possessed, the influence he exerted, and the services he rendered in the establishment and diffusion of important truth... Calvin is the man who, next to St. Paul, has done most good to mankind." - William Cunningham (on the Puritan Hard Drive)

Commentary on Ephesians (2 of 7) (Christ Was Made the Head of the Church) by John Calvin (Free SWRB MP3)

Dr. Steven Dilday on the Puritan Hard Drive

"It would not be possible for me too earnestly to press upon you the importance of reading the expositions of that prince among men, JOHN CALVIN. I am afraid that scant purses may debar you from their purchase, but if it be possible procure them... You will find the twenty-two goodly volumes worth their weight in gold. Of all the commentators I believe John Calvin to be the most candid... He was no trimmer and pruner of texts. He gave their meaning as far as he knew it... He labored to declare not his own mind upon the Spirit's words, but the mind of the Spirit as couched in those words." - Charles Spurgeon

It is entirely by the intervention of Christ's righteousness that we obtain justification before God. This is equivalent to saying that man is not just in himself, but that the righteousness of Christ is communicated to him by imputation, while he is strictly deserving of punishment.- John Calvin on the Puritan Hard Drive

All human inventions which are set up to corrupt the simple purity of the Word of God, and to undo the worship which he demands and approves, are true sacrileges, in which the Christian man cannot participate without blaspheming God, and trampling his honour underfoot. - John Calvin

Seeking the Lord's Face by John Calvin, First Time English Translation from the Book, Come Out From Among Them: The Anti-Nicodemite Writings of John Calvin (Free SWRB MP3)

Terence Ellard on the Puritan Hard Drive

"I come now to our doctrine. Many people condemn it out of prejudice, without hearing or exploring it. They are too occupied with some opinion or other that totally dulls the sharp edge of their minds. I am not going to mention the insults and even criminal acts that are imputed to us in an effort to keep everyone from tasting our doctrine. Only one thing can be charged against us, that we strive to call back to their own banner (namely, the Word of God) all those who are counted as belonging to Christ but who have been wandering about wretchedly. We are also bringing it about that all controversy over the worship of God is settled on the basis of his Word, so that each person may believe what is established as being from God... We acknowledge a church that rests on the sure foundation of prophetic and apostolic doctrine, whose single and unchanging head is and remains Christ. The church in which God's Word does not rule is adulterous. On this basis we conclude that the worship of God must be instituted in accordance with his command. Nothing handed down or introduced by men can be tolerated. It is for God alone to fix the law in our consciences. Only he has the right to ordain what he wants us to do." - John Calvin, "A Letter of Exhortation and Defense, Addressed to a Certain Pontiff," Corpus Reformatorum, Vol. 38, Part I, pp. 181-184, as translated and cited in Calvin's Ecclesiastical Advice, pp. 55-56.

Calvin, Covenanting, Close Communion and the Coming Reformation (1996) by Dr. Reg Barrow (Free SWRB MP3 and PDF)

Dr. Reg Barrow demonstrates how social covenanting and close communion were practiced by John Calvin in Geneva. Furthermore, Dr. Barrow demonstrates that John Calvin, in his desire to uphold sola Scriptura and promote further Reformation, saw the faithful implementation of these two ordinances (social covenanting and close communion) as the means ordained of God to extend, protect, and consolidate the work of the Holy Spirit -- in the individual, civil, and (especially) the ecclesiastical battle against the man of sin in his day.

Separation From False Worship, Idolatry, Popish Principles By John Calvin, First Time English Translation from the Book, Come Out From Among Them: The Anti-Nicodemite Writings of John Calvin (Free SWRB MP3)

Pastor William J Mencarow on the Puritan Hard Drive

Thus, the wickedness of many is still the reason why the Church is troubled by divisions, and why contentions are kindled. Yet those who disturb the peace, throw the blame on us, and call us Schismatics; for the principal charge which the Papists bring against us is, that our doctrine has shaken the tranquility of the Church. Yet the truth is, that, if they would yield submissively to Christ, and give their support to the truth, all the commotions would immediately be allayed. But when they utter murmurs and complaints against Christ, and will not allow us to be at rest on any other condition than that the truth of God shall be extinguished, and that Christ shall be banished from his kingdom, they have no right to accuse us of the crime of schism; for it is on themselves, as every person sees, that this crime ought to be charged. We ought to be deeply grieved that the Church is torn by divisions arising among those who profess the same religion; but it is better that there are some who separate themselves from the wicked, to be united to Christ their Head, than that all should be of one mind  in despising God. Consequently, when schisms arise, we ought to inquire who they are that revolt from God and from his pure doctrine. - John Calvin, Commentary on John 10:19, Calvin's Commentaries, Vol. XVII, p. 411

Let this therefore be the first step, that a man depart from himself in order that he may apply the whole force of his ability in the service of the Lord. I call 'service' not only what lies in obedience to God's Word but what turns the mind of man, empty of its own carnal sense, wholly to the bidding of God's Spirit. - John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, 3.7.1

The History of the Service of Song in Scripture by John Calvin, Robert Murray McCheyne, Dr. Steven Dilday, Greg Price, Dr. Reg Barrow, et al.

"Some one will therefore ask me what counsel I would like to give to a believer who thus dwells in some Egypt or Babylon where he may not worship God purely, but is forced by the common practice to accommodate himself to bad things. The first advice would be to leave [i.e. relocate - GB] if he could... If someone has no way to depart, I would counsel him to consider whether it would be possible for him to abstain from all idolatry in order to preserve himself pure and spotless toward God in both body and soul. Then let him worship God in private (at home - ed.), praying him to restore his poor church to its right estate. - John Calvin, Come Out From Among Them, The Anti-Nicodemite Writings of John Calvin, Protestant Heritage Press, "A Short Treatise," pp. 93-94, emphases added. Calvin quote (above) cited in Appendix G in The Covenanted Reformation Defended by Greg Barrow

As the saving doctrine of Christ is the soul of the church, so discipline forms ligaments which connect the members together, and keep each in its proper place. Whoever, therefore, either desire the abolition of all discipline, or obstruct its restoration, whether they act from design or inadvertency, they certainly promote the entire dissolution of the Church. - John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion

Pastor Greg L. Price Reviews and Recommends
the Puritan Hard Drive

Pastor Greg L. Price

Pastor Greg L. Price

I was one of those who had profited much from using the plethora of out-of-print Reformation materials offered by Still Waters Revival Books in the 62 CDs (Puritan CDs and Reformation CDs) for a number of years in  my ministry -- works that I could only have found in select libraries (usually hundreds of miles away from my residence).

With the CDs, it took a little while to go to the index of each set, locate the documents I needed, and then find the correct CD. Of course, the time was always well spent in finding that particular document that I needed.

However, now that I have the Puritan Hard Drive, I am able to use my time much more efficiently in finding that particular document I need by quickly searching for it and finding it in a matter of seconds. It's like going from "dial up" to "high-speed" Internet!

And for all of those documents that have a font that are in block letters, I am able to simply cut and paste from the Puritan Hard Drive to my own document with ease.

Amazing surprises do come in small packages!

If you want to understand Reformed theology (i.e., the whole counsel of God) the Puritan Hard Drive is unsurpassed, outside the Bible itself. The First and Second Reformations gave us the most faithful Scriptural teaching and preaching since the time of the Apostles, and there is no other resource, outside Scripture itself, where you can find so much of God's truth as in the Puritan Hard Drive.

May the Lord continue to use this most profitable tool to promote a Third Reformation that encompasses the whole world (Isaiah 2:2-4)!
