Family Reformation (1 of 7) Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva, Parents, Parenting by Scott Brown (Free SWRB MP3)

"Scott Brown has done us yeoman service in culling the vast corpus of John Calvin in order to amass hundreds of valuable quotations on what this colossal Reformer had to say on marriage and family. What a fascinating treasure-trove Family Reformation is, addressing scores of subjects that are as pertinent today as in Calvin's own day! As always, Calvin is scriptural, practical, thorough, succinct, powerful, and honest. This may well be one of the best and most helpful marriage and family books on the market today. Use it as your daily devotional, and give a copy to your friends. Every conscientious family will be enriched by Calvin's wise advice." - Dr. Joel Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

Family Reformation (2 of 7) Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva, Womanhood, Wives by Scott Brown (Free SWRB MP3)

A revival movement which ignores the commands and practices of biblical family life and expands at the expense of children, marriages, and biblical family life cannot stand beyond its own time. Not only does it expire under the weight of the judgment of God for despising major categories of Scripture regarding family relationships, it does not have the multigenerational mentality it needs to pass the reformation on to upcoming generations. - Scott Brown: Family Reformation: The Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva, p. 34.

Family Reformation (3 of 7) Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva, Husband Affection by Scott Brown (Free SWRB MP3)

"And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up" (Deuteronomy 6: 5-7, emphases added).

Family Reformation (4 of 7) Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva, Teaching Children by Scott Brown (Free SWRB MP3)

"Piety is the best thing that a parent can teach a child... Parents are by God made watchmen over their childrenŠ They must therefore nurture them in the admonition of the Lord." - William Gouge, Of Domestic Duties, on the Puritan Hard Drive

Family Reformation (5 of 7) Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva, Honoring Parents by Scott Brown (Free SWRB MP3)

"... the spring of all reformation... is that which is found in families. If they were but either well constituted, or well ordered and reformed, the whole work were done." - Daniel Cawdrey, Family Reformation Promoted, 1656

Pastor Greg Price on the Puritan Hard Drive

Family Reformation (6 of 7) Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva, Family at Church by Scott Brown (Free SWRB MP3)

A Family is a little Church, and a little Commonwealth... Or rather, it is as a School wherein the first principles and grounds of government and subjection are learned; whereby men are fitted to greater matters in Church or Commonwealth." - William Gouge, Of Domestical Duties, 1622, on the Puritan Hard Drive

Dr. Steven Dilday on the Puritan Hard Drive

Family Reformation (7 of 7) Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva, Hope for the Future by Scott Brown (Free SWRB MP3)

"Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come! It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones." - Luke 17:12, KJV

Family Reformation by Pastor Scott Brown

Family Reformation: The Legacy of Sola Scriptura in Calvin's Geneva by Scott Brown (Discounted Paperback Book at Amazon.com)

While the doctrine of salvation was being reformed during the sixteenth century, so was marriage, manhood, womanhood, courtship, child raising, fertility, abortion, and almost every area that touches family life. John Calvin never wrote a book on the family, but he touched off a family reformation. He was the instigator of a massive restructuring of the most fundamental institution of society.

Like no other reformer, Calvin provided the exegetical precision that defined the terms for a biblical vision of family life. With crystal clarity he explained the details of the how the family had exchanged the glory of God for a lie. We should be thankful to this dear brother for excavating the gold mines of the Bible and exposing the raw biblical language and bedrock principles that form the doctrine of the Christian family.

This book seeks to communicate the main themes of Calvin's teaching on family life in his own words, using quotes from his books, sermons, letters, and other writings. In Geneva there were many victories in the battle to reform the family. Let me suggest that it may be difficult to win todays battles for the family unless we understand the victories of the sixteenth century.

Biblical Family Worship (45 Free MP3s)

"... to the end that these directions may not be rendered ineffectual and unprofitable among some, through the usual neglect of the very substance of the duty of Family-worship, the Assembly doth further require and appoint ministers and ruling elders to make diligent search and enquiry, in the congregations committed to their charge respectively, whether there be among them any family or families which use to neglect this necessary duty; and if any such family be found, the head of the family is to be first admonished privately to amend his fault; and, in case of his continuing therein, he is to be gravely and sadly reproved by the session; after which reproof, if he be found still to neglect Family-worship, let him be, for his obstinacy in such an offence, suspended and debarred from the Lord's supper, as being justly esteemed unworthy to communicate therein, till he amend." - The Directory for Family Worship, ASSEMBLY AT EDINBURGH, August 24, 1647, Sess. 10. ACT for observing the Directions of the GENERAL ASSEMBLY for secret and private Worship, and mutual Edification; and censuring such as neglect Family-worship (emphases added), on the Puritan Hard Drive.

Building a Godly Home, Volume 1: A Holy Vision for Family Life by William Gouge (Discounted Hardcover Book at Reformation Heritage Books)

This is a reprint (not facsimile) of the 1622 edition. For years, William Gouge's Domestical Duties has stood as the foremost Puritan treatment of Christian family life. Yet due to its size and antiquated expression, it has become almost unknown among current generations of believers. To help revive the usefulness of this classic book, Scott Brown and Joel R. Beeke divided Gouge's work into three manageable volumes, updated the language to modern standards, and have given it the title Building a Godly Home.

In the first volume, A Holy Vision for Family Life, we hear the voice of a wise and loving mentor, calling us to the old paths laid out for the family in the Bible. Here is Gouge's helpful exposition of Ephesians 5:21--6:4, where he lays out the wife's voluntary submission to her husband, the husband's sacrificial love for his wife, the child's obedient honoring of parents, and the parents' nurturing leadership of their children. Reading it is like sitting down to coffee with a gentle grandfather and wise pastor. Come and allow your family to benefit from such wise counsel.

Pastor Paul Washer Reviews and Recommends
the Puritan Hard Drive

"In the history of extra-biblical study and research tools there has never before been a resource as useful as the Puritan Hard Drive."

Pastor Paul Washer

Pastor Paul Washer, HeartCry Missionary Society

With the Puritan Hard Drive I can now carry one of the largest Puritan and Reformed libraries in my pocket.

No matter where I am, as long as there is some form of power source to operate a computer, I have access to some of the best Puritan and Reformed literature available.

The Puritan Hard Drive is a tremendous blessing. I travel frequently to many parts of the globe. The Puritan Hard Drive allows me to continue my studies on the road with the same depth as when I am seated in my study at home.

The wonderful portability of this massive Puritan library (and remarkable research software) makes the Puritan Hard Drive ideal for missionaries, students, or anyone who needs instant access to the best Reformation study materials in a variety of locations.

There is much more to the Puritan Hard Drive than just convenience, portability and the exceptional quality and extraordinary number of Reformation resources it includes. Even if a minister owned the largest printed Puritan library in the world, he would not be able to properly research the material. However, the KnowledgeBase software on the Puritan Hard Drive provides an effective road map to access the material in ways that are easy-to-use, organized and highly productive. With the click of a button, you can easily do ten hours worth of research in just seconds!

Having the Puritan Hard Drive is like owning the largest Puritan and Reformed Library in the world along with a full time research assistant with his PhD in Puritan Studies from Oxford or Cambridge.

Imagine not only owning the largest Puritan and Reformed library, but having a full-time team of world-class research assistants at your beck and call.

The high level of educational and scholarly functionality, combined with a marvelous library of over 12,500 top Puritan and Reformed resources and an extremely reasonable price, really makes obtaining the Puritan Hard Drive a stewardship issue. It is almost as if God is saying, "Here is a tool that will lead you to more truth faster than ever before. Make the best possible use of it and bring much glory to My Name." (2 Timothy 2:15, Ephesians 5:16).

In the history of extra-biblical study and research tools there has never before been a resource as useful as the Puritan Hard Drive. The immense body of Reformation material (books, MP3s and videos) on the Puritan Hard Drive, along with the phenomenal proprietary software program that is included, makes the Puritan Hard Drive a valuable tool for Reformation in our day.

As a member of the HeartCry Missionary Society, I am witness to the great needs of Christians throughout the globe. Possibly the greatest need is sound Christian literature. Even though many Third World pastors read English, they have very few good books available to them. Even if we could afford to buy each indigenous minister a small library, the cost of shipping would be astronomical.  With the Puritan Hard Drive we can provide pastors throughout the globe with one of the most complete Puritan and Reformed libraries at a fraction of the cost.

The Puritan Hard Drive is also ideal for situations where concealment is a priority in countries which are hostile to the Gospel. The Puritan Hard Drive is the most compact way to smuggle the light of over 12,500 Reformation resources (with powerful study software) into the spiritual darkness of those nations that are in most need of Gospel truth.
