Predestination and Providence by Hugh Binning (Digital Download, Enhanced SWRB PDF)

Hugh Binning was a Scottish Presbyterian during the mid 17th century. At 19, he became Professor of Philosophy at Glasgow University. Dr. M'Crie said of him that "very few writers please me more." Here Binning deals with God's decree, explaining how God has revealed that He "works all things after the counsel of His own will" (Eph. 1:11). He proclaims the fact that God's providence extends to "all His creatures and all their actions" (Westminster Shorter Catechism, Answer 11). - Excerpted from the 1858 edition of Hugh Binning's Works.

Christian Love by Hugh Binning (Printed Book at Reformation Heritage Books)

The Scottish minister Hugh Binning (1627-1653) shows that love is the badge of Christianity and should motivate all Christians to strive to demonstrate its presence in their lives. He describes how love works itself out practically in acts of righteousness and mercy, and shows humility and meekness to be its root and fruit. Also included in this book are three of his forty sermons on Romans 8:1-15, entitled The Sinner's Sanctuary.

The Works of Hugh Binning (1858) (Digital Download, Enhanced SWRB PDF)

The Works of Hugh Binning (1858) consists of a series of magisterial addresses on the Common Principles of the Christian religion, a series of 40 sermons on Romans 8 entitled "The Sinner's Sanctuary", a series on I John, and miscellaneous other addresses, amongst them a delightful "Treatise on Christian Love." Of Hugh Binning, David Lachman writes, "Binning's more simple and natural preaching, coupled with considerable eloquence, a warm practical piety and skillful application to his hearers' hearts, made him a most popular preacher. James Durham commented: 'There is no speaking after Mr Binning.' Binning's preaching was warmly evangelical, urging sinners to come to Christ without previous preparations, which he described as a form of establishing our own righteousness and being ignorant of Christ's... He took the side of the Protesters in the division in the (Scottish -RB) Church."

Worshipping God in Spirit and Truth by Hugh Binning (Digital Download, Enhanced SWRB PDF)

Hugh Binning's Worshipping God in Spirit and Truth shows what it means to worship God "in spirit and truth." Exposes much modern worship as self-idolatry and will worship as devised by dreamers who bring the vain ceremony and pomp of their own minds into worship of God. These innovations in worship are shown to be nothing more than the practical denial of God's sovereignty. They deny God's right to rule in his own house and bring with them manifold curses upon their practitioners. Faithfully maintains the Reformation standard for public worship, viz., "if God does not require it, He abhors it." There is no neutrality! - Excerpted from the 1858 edition of Hugh Binning's Works.

Hugh Binning (1627-1653) Biographical Sketch from covenanter.org

A Scottish Presbyterian who wrote some of the best works on Christian love.

Hugh Binning was son of John Binning and Margaret M'Kell, daughter of Matthew M'Kell, minister of Bothwell, and sister of Hugh M'Kell, one of the ministers of Edinburgh. His father's worldly circumstances were so good that Hugh was given a very liberal education. Before the age of fourteen, he entered upon the study of philosophy in the University of Glasgow. By the age of nineteen, he became regent and professor of philosophy. After three years as a professor of philosophy, he was called to be minister of Govan, which is adjacent to the city of Glasgow. When the split occurred between the Resolutioners and Protesters, Binning sided with the latter. It is said that the Presbyterians and Independents, disputing before Cromwell while he was in Scotland, Mr. Binning, being present, so managed the controverted points, that he silenced Cromwell's ministers. After labouring four years in the gospel ministry, Binning died of consumption, in 1653.

Pastor Greg L. Price Reviews and Recommends
the Puritan Hard Drive

Pastor Greg L. Price

Pastor Greg L. Price

I was one of those who had profited much from using the plethora of out-of-print Reformation materials offered by Still Waters Revival Books in the 62 CDs (Puritan CDs and Reformation CDs) for a number of years in  my ministry -- works that I could only have found in select libraries (usually hundreds of miles away from my residence).

With the CDs, it took a little while to go to the index of each set, locate the documents I needed, and then find the correct CD. Of course, the time was always well spent in finding that particular document that I needed.

However, now that I have the Puritan Hard Drive, I am able to use my time much more efficiently in finding that particular document I need by quickly searching for it and finding it in a matter of seconds. It's like going from "dial up" to "high-speed" Internet!

And for all of those documents that have a font that are in block letters, I am able to simply cut and paste from the Puritan Hard Drive to my own document with ease.

Amazing surprises do come in small packages!

If you want to understand Reformed theology (i.e., the whole counsel of God) the Puritan Hard Drive is unsurpassed, outside the Bible itself. The First and Second Reformations gave us the most faithful Scriptural teaching and preaching since the time of the Apostles, and there is no other resource, outside Scripture itself, where you can find so much of God's truth as in the Puritan Hard Drive.

May the Lord continue to use this most profitable tool to promote a Third Reformation that encompasses the whole world (Isaiah 2:2-4)!
