Pray and Be Alone with God By Paul Washer (Free MP3 and PDF)

Paul Washer mentions George Mueller and Hudson Taylor in this message, so we have added a number of resources related to each of these two brothers in Christ further down this page (below). The life stories of both of these men are inspirational and will be a blessing, by God's grace, to all who read or listen to these works.

Once, while crossing the Atlantic on the SS Sardinian in August 1877, his ship ran into thick fog. He explained to the captain that he needed to be in Quebec by the following afternoon, but Captain Joseph E Dutton (later known as "Holy Joe") said that he was slowing the ship down for safety and Müller's appointment would have to be missed. Müller asked to use the chartroom to pray for the lifting of the fog. The captain followed him down, claiming it would be a waste of time. After Müller prayed, the captain started to pray, but Müller stopped him; partly because of the captain's unbelief, but mainly because he believed the prayer had already been answered. When the two men went back to the bridge, they found the fog had lifted. The captain became a Christian shortly afterwards. Müller's faith in God strengthened day by day and he spent hours in daily prayer and Bible reading -- indeed, it was his practice, in later years, to read through the entire Bible four times a year. - Wikipedia, Steer, p. 177 and Warne, p. 230.

John Calvin on Intimate Prayer by Dr. Joel Beeke (Free MP3)

This fine message teaches us how to foster intimate communion with God -- and how we can know the sweetness and approachableness of God, as a loving Father, in and through prayer. "Calvin was the theologian of prayer." - Dr. Joel Beeke

Our prayer must not be self-centered. It must arise not only because we feel our own need as a burden we must lay upon God, but also because we are so bound up in love for our fellow men that we feel their need as acutely as our own. To make intercession for men is the most powerful and practical way in which we can express our love for them. - John Calvin

Song of Solomon: Prayer as Communion By Paul Washer (Free MP3 and Video)

"This is a great Sermon! Very needed in today's culture. This sermon helped me in my study of the Bible, because I always viewed the Song of Solomon as only for married people. But now I see that it is also a beautiful book about our relationship with God!" - Comment on SermonAudio. A useful related resource is An Exposition of The Song of Solomon by James Durham (Free SWRB Audio Book, Many MP3s)

Dr. Steven Dilday on the Puritan Hard Drive

Müller prayed about everything and expected each prayer to be answered. One example was when one of the orphan house's boiler stopped working; Müller needed to have it fixed. Now this was a problem, because the boiler was bricked up and the weather was worsening with each day. So he prayed for two things; firstly that the workers he had hired would have a mind to work throughout the night, and secondly that the weather would let up. On the Tuesday before the work was due to commence, a bitter north wind still blew but in the morning, before the workmen arrived, a southerly wind began to blow and it was so mild that no fires were needed to heat the buildings. That evening, the foreman of the contracted company attended the site to see how he might speed things along, and instructed the men to report back first thing in the morning to make an early resumption of work. The team leader stated that they would prefer to work through the night. The job was done in 30 hours. - Wikipedia, Garton, pp. 126-148.

The Life of George Mueller By Dr. William R. Downing (Free MP3)

An edifying message about one of the world's great prayer warriors, who was, interestingly, friends with Charles Spurgeon. This message also notes that Mueller was a Calvinist and Postmillennialist, and demonstrates, as Martin Luther noted, "Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance, but laying hold of His willingness." Many remarkable instances of answered prayers are also chronicled in this message, showing how God is more the willing to hear and answer our prayers -- for His greater declarative glory. However, because John Wesley and man-made (uninspired) hymns are mentioned or used in this message (and the two messages above) we need to include the following five resources, so that these portions of these messages do not stumble those who are seeking God's truth about these matters.

I never remember, in all my Christian course, a period now (in March, 1895) of sixty-nine years and four months, that I ever SINCERELY and PATIENTLY sought to know the will of God by the teaching of the Holy Ghost, through the instrumentality of the Word of God, but I have been ALWAYS directed rightly. But if honesty of heart and uprightness before God were lacking, or if I did not patiently wait upon God for instruction, or if I preferred the counsel of my fellow men to the declarations of the Word of the living God, I made great mistakes. - George Mueller, Answers To Prayer

The History of the Service of Song by Dr. Steven Dilday

Many times, he received unsolicited food donations only hours before they were needed to feed the children, further strengthening his faith in God. For example, on one well-documented occasion, they gave thanks for breakfast when all the children were sitting at the table, even though there was nothing to eat in the house. As they finished praying, the baker knocked on the door with sufficient fresh bread to feed everyone, and the milkman gave them plenty of fresh milk because his cart broke down in front of the orphanage. - Wikipedia, Steer, p. 131

Mueller - Taking God at His Word by Steve Wilson (Free MP3)

There are few recorded instances of men who trusted God in prayer to the extent that George Mueller did, making Mueller a shining example of what God is willing to do, through prayer, if we will call upon Him, trust in Him, and live for Him.

In our natural state we dislike dealing with God alone. Through our natural alienation from God we shrink from Him, and from eternal realities. This cleaves to us more or less, even after our regeneration. Hence it is, that more or less, even as believers, we have the same shrinking from standing with God alone, -- from depending upon Him alone, -- from looking to Him alone: -- and yet this is the very position in which we ought to be, if we wish our faith to be strengthened. The more I am in a position to be tried in faith with reference to my body, my family, my service for the Lord, my business, etc., the more shall I have opportunity of seeing God's help and deliverance. - George Mueller

The Zealous Christian Holding Communion With God, in Wrestling and Importunate Prayer By Christopher Love (8 Free SWRB MP3s)

Reflecting on the Calvinistic doctrines of grace, Muller wrote his diary (1829) the following: "Before this period I had been much opposed to the doctrines of election, particular redemption, and final persevering grace; so much so that, a few days after my arrival at Teignmouth, I called election a devilish doctrine. I did not believe that I had brought myself to the Lord, for that was too manifestly false; but yet I held, that I might have resisted finally. And further, I knew nothing about the choice of God's people, and did not believe that the child of God, when once made so, was safe for ever. In my fleshly mind I had repeatedly said, If once I could prove that I am a child of God for ever, I might go back into the world for a year or two, and then return to the Lord, and at last be saved. But now I was brought to examine these precious truths by the word of God. Being made willing to have no glory of my own in the conversion of sinners, but to consider myself merely as an instrument; and being made willing to receive what the Scriptures said; I went to the Word, reading the New Testament from the beginning, with a particular reference to these truths. To my great astonishment I found that the passages which speak decidedly for election and persevering grace, were about four times as many as those which speak apparently against these truths; and even those few, shortly after, when I had examined and understood them, served to confirm me in the above doctrines." - A Narrative of Some of the Lord's Dealings with George Müller as cited from Theopedia

Prayer: Our God Not Only Hears Prayer But Also Loves To Hear It By Charles Spurgeon (Free SWRB MP3)

Earthly friends may alter their minds regarding the work in which we are engaged; but if indeed we work for God, whoever may alter His mind regarding our service, He will not. Ezra #53, On the Road To Reformation, Prayer, Fasting, Covenanting and God's Honor By Greg Price (Free SWRB MP3)

Prayer is not appointed for the furnishing of God with the knowledge of what we need, but it is designed as a confession to Him of our sense of the need. How To Get Answers To Prayer by Greg Price (Free SWRB MP3 and Video)

Some say, "I would feel better about God hearing my prayer if I were more worthy and lived a better life." I simply answer: If you don't want to pray before you feel that you are worthy or qualified, then you will never pray again. Prayer must not be based on or depend on your personal worthiness or the quality of the prayer itself; rather, it must be based on the unchanging truth of God's promise. If the prayer is based on itself or on anything else besides God's promise, then it's a false prayer that deceives you-even if your heart is breaking with intense devotion and you are weeping drops of blood. We pray because we are unworthy to pray. Our prayers are heard precisely because we believe that we are unworthy. We become worthy to pray when we risk everything on God's faithfulness alone. So go ahead and feel unworthy. But know in your heart that it's a thousand times more important to honor God's truthfulness. Yes, everything depends on this alone. Don't turn his faithful promise into a lie by your doubts. For your worthiness doesn't help you, and neither does your unworthiness hinder you. A lack of faith is what condemns you, but confidence in God is what makes you worthy. - Martin Luther

Order and Argument in Prayer (With Examples of Effective Historic Prayers From Scripture) by Charles Spurgeon

Real prayer is communion with God, so that there will be common thoughts between His mind and ours. What is needed is for Him to fill our hearts with His thoughts, and then His desires will become our desires flowing back to Him. - Arthur W. Pink

George Mueller of Bristol and His Witness to a Prayer-Hearing God by Arthur T. Pierson (Hardcover, Paperback and Kindle on Amazon)

A HUMAN life, filled with the presence and power of God, is one of God's choicest gifts to His church and to the world. Things which are unseen and eternal seem, to the carnal man, distant and indistinct, while what is seen and temporal is vivid and real. Practically, any object in nature that can be seen or felt is thus more real and actual to most men than the Living God. Every man who walks with God, and finds Him a present Help in every time of need; who puts His promises to the practical proof and verifies them in actual experience; every believer who with the key of faith unlocks God's mysteries, and with the key of prayer unlocks God's treasuries, thus furnishes to the race a demonstration and an illustration of the fact that "He is, and is a Rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. ... Arthur T. Pierson (1837-1911) served prominent pulpit both in America and Great Britain, preaching for two years at the Metropolitan Tabernacle following C. H. Spurgeon's death." - From Amazon

Neglect of private prayer and meditation comes from a weariness of God, as Isaiah complains (Isa. 43:22). But God alone is the fountain and spring of spiritual life. Any withdrawing from him must bring about a decline, for what we are in private duties, that we are, and no more. If this root fails, all fruit will quickly fail. Just as a tree must decay, wither and droop if the root fails, so must our souls. - John Owen

Pastor Paul Washer Reviews and Recommends
the Puritan Hard Drive

"In the history of extra-biblical study and research tools there has never before been a resource as useful as the Puritan Hard Drive."

Pastor Paul Washer

Pastor Paul Washer, HeartCry Missionary Society

With the Puritan Hard Drive I can now carry one of the largest Puritan and Reformed libraries in my pocket.

No matter where I am, as long as there is some form of power source to operate a computer, I have access to some of the best Puritan and Reformed literature available.

The Puritan Hard Drive is a tremendous blessing. I travel frequently to many parts of the globe. The Puritan Hard Drive allows me to continue my studies on the road with the same depth as when I am seated in my study at home.

The wonderful portability of this massive Puritan library (and remarkable research software) makes the Puritan Hard Drive ideal for missionaries, students, or anyone who needs instant access to the best Reformation study materials in a variety of locations.

There is much more to the Puritan Hard Drive than just convenience, portability and the exceptional quality and extraordinary number of Reformation resources it includes. Even if a minister owned the largest printed Puritan library in the world, he would not be able to properly research the material. However, the KnowledgeBase software on the Puritan Hard Drive provides an effective road map to access the material in ways that are easy-to-use, organized and highly productive. With the click of a button, you can easily do ten hours worth of research in just seconds!

Having the Puritan Hard Drive is like owning the largest Puritan and Reformed Library in the world along with a full time research assistant with his PhD in Puritan Studies from Oxford or Cambridge.

Imagine not only owning the largest Puritan and Reformed library, but having a full-time team of world-class research assistants at your beck and call.

The high level of educational and scholarly functionality, combined with a marvelous library of over 12,500 top Puritan and Reformed resources and an extremely reasonable price, really makes obtaining the Puritan Hard Drive a stewardship issue. It is almost as if God is saying, "Here is a tool that will lead you to more truth faster than ever before. Make the best possible use of it and bring much glory to My Name." (2 Timothy 2:15, Ephesians 5:16).

In the history of extra-biblical study and research tools there has never before been a resource as useful as the Puritan Hard Drive. The immense body of Reformation material (books, MP3s and videos) on the Puritan Hard Drive, along with the phenomenal proprietary software program that is included, makes the Puritan Hard Drive a valuable tool for Reformation in our day.

As a member of the HeartCry Missionary Society, I am witness to the great needs of Christians throughout the globe. Possibly the greatest need is sound Christian literature. Even though many Third World pastors read English, they have very few good books available to them. Even if we could afford to buy each indigenous minister a small library, the cost of shipping would be astronomical.  With the Puritan Hard Drive we can provide pastors throughout the globe with one of the most complete Puritan and Reformed libraries at a fraction of the cost.

The Puritan Hard Drive is also ideal for situations where concealment is a priority in countries which are hostile to the Gospel. The Puritan Hard Drive is the most compact way to smuggle the light of over 12,500 Reformation resources (with powerful study software) into the spiritual darkness of those nations that are in most need of Gospel truth.
